I recommend you get someone to review your work honestly. Uncertainty will follow you until the very end, but it does help to get some intel on your side. Oh and if you're gonna actually have your stuff reviewed, i don't recommend presenting more than three or five at a time.

How to Improve Art, Really?

If i was you i'd start by practicing head design, add mouths after you got the hang of things, ears, and then eyes. Then start on expressions. Try some hair. And finally color for inbetween as well as on the lines.
