Day 60:

Anxiety

I woke up at 4:30 today because it´s freaking cold in Germany.
Then I saw a Youtube video and they said that Heinrich Kley (one of
my favourite german artists and a big influence on Disney) stood up
every day and started drawing at 4:30. Kind of inspiring.

Then I thought I need to learn how to shade properly but I don´t
know which learning resource to use.

Then I planned a 22 page comic book which was pretty cool,
a story I have in mind for a long time, but now I finally did a first
draft which story to put into the first book.

Then I drew this skycraper with wrong perspective

Coming back to the forums again for a brief moment in time!! Ahh we’re thinking about setting goals for next year already? D: I think my goal is just to… FINISH SOMETHING haha I need to get over my fears and just go into project confidently! Nothing is perfect, but whatever I create it’ll be better than a vacant page. I just gotta do it >:0

I did work on a short story, I finished that draft!! So I might have reached that goal finally lol. I just need to edit and draw some spot illustrations before I submit to some journals…

Here’s some art though I’ve been working on! A finished illustration just in time before fall changes to winter lol and then some sketches of the three resident vampires for one particular story… when I started to realize I was a vampire novelist

FINISH SOMETHING

I often think I should just finish a super simple comic just to get better at sequential art,
but it´s really hard to do that when you have a more or less specific artstyle in mind
and when you can´t draw like that.

This is a wip of a picture I´m painting in the color & lighting course that I started.
It´s still in the ugly phase. Painting is the hardest discipline for me because
it´s against my whole personality. Painting is the most vague thing to do
and I have problems with things being vague, I constantly want to draw lines.
I´m also really bad at guessing colors, but that´s something I just skipped.
I´m using colors in my illustrations but I don´t guess them + I always work
with very limited color palettes.

@abigaillmartin omg??? You know yeah, that’s honestly kind of accurate By the time he’s in the 21ist century essentially cosplaying as a crackhead highschooler he would be hanging around guys like that lol

@Lensing Ah! Yeah finishing things is just a big struggle for me, not so much because I lack the ability, but I lack the confidence. My block is mental. Like technically I’ve written around 100,000 words so far this but they’re spread around a bunch of different stories I’m so afraid to publish my work in the real world, but I just have to move past my fear of the initial rejection phase :’) I do have a short story I did complete though so I’ll give myself a pat on the back for that. You’ve got comics done before though I thought D:?

I have finished comics, published them, won prizes, teach kids etc.
But the comics and illustrations have nothing to do with the comics
that I want to draw / my passion project.

Another bonus on top of the overthinking / perfectionism is that my
passion project is adult content. I can´t share that with other people,
don´t have people to collab with me on it. This means I have to pull
it through one time without sharing anything. It´s hard to stay motivated

@beebutterbee Lewis and Clark will have their own arch though and their friendship break up. Lewis is the smarter one of the two and he tells Clark “I’m done with you dragging me down dude. I want to play the drums with Ernest. Also. I have straight As. I’m not losing my streak man!”

Something like that. It’s gonna be great! The whole thing is going to be great!

@Lensing I am also quite the perfectionist. I overthink things too. I know how it feels.

@abigaillmartin Yeah same I also struggle with perfectionism I think a big reason I started butter bee was to do a practice in unlearning that perfectionism! I’m still working on it though… I think also it’s been hard to deal with life in general, as I’m still in a period of grieving (I lost three people last year at the beginning of this year) So I haven’t worked on much projects as of late.

But Lewis and Clark arc sounds fun I guess their friendship is bound to fall apart in whatever universe they find themselves in?

@Lensing Ah! Is it like completely NSFW projects? I feel like you could find a group of artists online that work on NSFW stuff, if you want feedback for things you cannot share in most online spaces? I guess I don’t have that problem as much, as my friends are writers and artists who sometimes make more “adult content” so I have people to share projects with, whatever the project might be! So I don’t have any real good tips on how to find those people to brainstorm with and such That does suck to not be able to show off your project, I can see where it would be hard to motivate yourself.

Day 62:

Painting felt way better today, it was kind of relaxing instead of stressful.
I didn´t get to the "ugly phase" yet, this is just the background + underpainting.
Matching the colors of the background was a bit easier today.

I´ll have a 3 part drawing routine for 2026, some stuff I´ll do every morning
4 days a week from monday - thursday. Fr-Su have to be off days because I´ll
be working and on the road.

1) figure drawing. I´ll draw the figure from front, 2 sides and back + muscles.
Then 10 gesture drawings á 30 seconds
2) painting
3) portrait drawing

Pretending to know what I´m doing, I´m following the art instruction and her painting looks
completely different, nothing is explained and she´s like you have to trust the process because
this is still the ugly phase. I don´t know what I´m doing

Day 57: which is also day one of actively building a children's book illustration portfolio. (is it called a portfolio if it's examples of what you can do that have never been used)? regardless, I started by sketching a character design. I'm basically building two little example kid's book worlds. One is going to be cute and sweet and the other is for the chaotic kids with a weird sense of humor because those have and will always be my favorite kid's books to read lol

This is obviously the weird one. A whole little world full of mad scientist kids who make the world weirder with every experiment. A verrrry rough sketch of the first character just to get a gist of her design. I will obviously have to do a lot of tweaking before she is a fleshed out character design. I am nowhere near as good at making aesthetic character designs as @beebutterbee and I am jealous of that every day XD.

Also am I the only one who feels like bowties have to be red? but also the bow tie being the only thing in color because I have yet to decide on the rest of the colors of anything is lowkey eerie
