A different type of artist

Im a writer. I cant draw, plain and simple as that. If you were to put a gun to my head and tell me to draw a.stick man kicking a ball, and to draw it well, I wouldn't make it. However, there is something I recently became a fan of call warhammer 40k. My "mentor"/friend has shown me the absolute joy and fun of assembling and painting my own army. I'm still not the best, but my paint jobs are pretty good. Who here also plays warhammer? What armies have you chosen to assemble? I have chosen salamanders! Show off your paint jobs!

I havnt played warhammer in a long time. Sorta dropped off during the price hike 10 yrs ago but I used to run lizard men, tyranids and had most of the lord of the rings minis. These days I mainly do DnD. But I've always enjoyed mini painting. Midwinter minis on youtube has some good beginner friendly tutorials.

I like to use Hero forge to design my characters then I get my partner to 3d print them.

I love DnD as well. Great paint jobs btw! I have decided, for now, to always run lizardfolk. I have two painted figures who are brothers. One is a criminal mastermind rogue and the other a vegetarian pacifist hermit monk

I've yet to try lizardfolk in dnd but kobold's are tempting. I have a few wiz kids minis to paint up at some point. Shame I dont have photos of my other mini's on hand as theyre all in storage.

Trying dif paints is always good, I tend to use a mix of vallejo and Games workshop paints from 15 yrs ago that are somehow still alive ( though most of my hoard have given up now). I have heard good things about army painter but those arnt as common in the uk.

Ohhhhhh boy yes I've been into Warhammer since I was eleven. I didn't play or collect at all from age 18 until my thirties, but because I got back into painting minis because I was painting up Reaper, Heroforge and Wizzkids for my D&D games (I'm a Dungeon Master), I saw the new range of 40k, read about how much more streamlined 9th edition is compared to the previous versions and how the setting lore was actually moving forward and I was like "Oh hell yes."

So here are my armies. For now I have Space Marines and Necrons because it was easy to buy the starter set and build from there. I collect Sons of the Phoenix because I love the implied lore behind them (ie. that Cawl totally used leftover Emperor's Children geneseed to make them but told everyone, including them that they're totes Imperial Fists successors) and their regal colour scheme. The chapter badge is a pain though. I had to get custom transfer paper, hence not all the army has badges yet because they're so fiddly!

And so they have someone to fight, I have Szarekhan Necrons. I love the new lore for the Necrons. When I was a teen they were new and their whole deal was being emotionless husks puppeted by evil gods, but now they have actual personality and motivation. I still need to finish basing some of these...

Once I have a thousand points of each of these, I'm probably going to switch to Adepta Sororitas (Yesssss space nuns! ) and Orks.

My mentor loves the nuns with guns! He has been in warhammer for 30+ years. I'm about to look into base painting but I gotta finish my armies first. I made a 10 man squad of salamander scouts and was super proud of how they and their cloaks turned out. Then my mentor goes "yeah, sons of Vulcan dont grow hair" facepalm

Oh wow is that colour scheme a callback to the old 1980s Rogue Trader era Salamanders colours!?

I applaud your bold choice. Salamanders are a really cool chapter too.

Actually the color choice came to me when I saw the current green. I thought it was too bright for "dragon" space marines. I'm still fairly new to 40k. So I chose a darker green and then their fifth company shoulder pad colors from the salamanders codex. Cuz green and orange work well for dragons I thought. My mentor didnt have any faith until he saw my assault intercessors. Then he was on board with me lol

I love Warhammer!
My boyfriend can't draw at all, but he's an excellent Warhammer painter.

Okay, off the off topic, but even if you can't draw you can paint a word picture because that opening sentence is quite evocative, lol! I think I knew a guy who did paints, not sure if it was for Warhammer only, but he also did other types of models like trains/trucks etc. I feel like any kind of paint on a pre-made figure is just so fun, like being able to do a character customization for a game irl. Played some DnD pre COVID and everyone had their own little models, some hand painted and some commissioned. I never got to paint my half orc paladin, but he did have his own little token to represent him on the board. Is it hard to get into Warhammer?

I am sad to say that for me, it was. Most people I talked too (irl cuz I never even THOUGHT of the internet for some reason!) I had heard of warhammer 40k a long time ago and was interested. But no one knew more than the name and I couldn't figure out how to join. I just happened to be at church one day waiting for it to start and this guy walks up and goes "so do you like games?" I was like "yeeeeeeah." "Ever heard of warhammer 40,000?" And then from there he helped me get started. My father in law got me my lizard folk minis for my first DnD game as well. If you wanted to start the hobby, I would suggest going to forums and finding out who (army choice) you want to start with. But be warned. It CAN be expensive. Also, thank you for the compliment

No problem! Well, I'm trying to be thriftier this winter (my job is somewhat seasonal) but then again, that hasn't stopped me from book shopping, so, ha. I'll have to see if anyone in my local DnD league has advice for me too.

You can never research enough. Prices fluctuate online but not in store.

Warhammer the main barrier honestly is cost of all the bits you need to start. Here's a good guide on getting into the hobby by a youtuber I like:
