So I've been having more theories (that are probably incorrect) now that I've had a theory on LWT that a lot of people seemed to take interest in. My theory on Tapas is more simple. I believe that a majority, perhaps not a vast one, but a majority, of people here are either webcomic artists or writers. I believe that the minority of Tapas artists are just readers.
There are a few points I'd like to present to support this argument, since I have no data.
The forum seems to be full of creators looking for other creators, trying to sell/promote their product, or asking for advice on how to support their product. There are fewer posts about readers saying "hey, I love this". At a glance, it appears that every post is "omg, please, I'm trying to make money with this, help me" in a hundred different thinly-veiled ways.
There are dozens, if not hundreds of comics that are extremely high quality that are completely ignored, and hundreds of comics that are OK quality that are immensely popular. This, to me, makes little sense, unless the audience here is mostly artists and creators in "competition" with other comics, and thus don't sub/like/upvote comics they find threatening or better than theirs. I noticed there's a lot of cute, nonthreatening comics out there that are very popular.
I don't know about you guys, but after two years of publications on a weekly basis, a total reboot, and 1000 subs (now back to 60 because of the reboot), I've made about 20 bucks in advertising and tips.
Wouldn't readers, who don't depend on Tapas for their income, be more interested in tipping the comics they read and enjoy? Tapas works really hard to make it easy these days. Or are most of the readers depending on Tapas for a tiny income and can't afford to? I'm leaning in the latter direction.
Bottom line: I'm very curious how many people on Tapas visit every day, but are not creators.
Anyway, I'm sure this annoyed everyone so I'm done with theories for awhile. And, I'm probably wrong.
