There’s an epidemic of new novels and some new comics on Tapas that are unabashedly sporting AI generated covers, banners, thumbnails and even interior art.

Should Tapas implement an AI detection filter when images are being uploaded to prevent this?

Having reported a comic or two and seen them get taken down relatively quickly, I'd say Tapas is doing the best to curtail AI of any platform I've seen so far. Could they do better? Sure. I don't think an AI-powered AI filter will do it, though. There are often many glitches with that kind of implementation.

The short answer: no.

The long answer: I wish AI detectors were reliable enough to do this sort of thing. It would reduce so much of the AI spam. Unfortunately, they aren't. They give way too many false positives to be trusted with the task. I'd rather not see genuine authors and artists caught in the crosshairs.

When the subject is about novel. Not everybody who can write well enough can draw, and if the question is why not hire a designer, Not everybody has the cost to afford the fee of the designer....And its made mandatory by tapas to for users to upload a banner and cover. Therefore, I think we should give some leeway to those who can't afford the traditional way of artwork. But there is not way for tapas to filter that out. therefore AI for novel cover and banner should be allowed. As In my opinion, No matter how good An AI art generator is, it can't give the exact thing you want unless you give it a proper prompt, and that's a skill that a person posses.

But when the subject is about Novel panels or Comics (Panels, covers and thumbnails) use of AI should be banned. Because if you're opting create a comic or a novel with panels, drawing is an essential expected from you.

Regardless of excuse theres really no reason to be using ai for covers since you risk readers losing confidence in the quality of a work (novel or comic) because if a person is so cheap or lazy to put an ai cover whose to say that the work inside is also not made with it

no one denies that there may be some barrier to getting good artwork for a series cover or for a project but you (in general not just you specifically) would be better off either saving up to commission a cover/banner (many artists offer these kinds of illustrations across platforms like ko-fi, vgen, etsy, artists & clients and other similar sites), using free to use stock photos and editing a cover in programs like canva or just asking to see if folks are willing to do one for free or cheap (granted not every artist will accept this as it takes time and effort much the same as writing does) but to say that Tapas (a website that started as a primarily comics platform and thus hosting a wide number of artists who are mostly opposed to the use of ai both for its ethical flaws and environmental harms) is both asinine and embarrassing

alternatives exist and the sites terms make clear its not allowed so theres no whining that its impossible to go without using when many other options exist not to mention its disrespectful to the artists you share a platform with especially when many have shared resources for good covers that dont use ai

A.I. detection throws too many false positives. I think it'd just be a headache for everyone.

Only for the really obvious ones. There's one webcomic after some serious studying I'm certain is using AI. I've reported it twice (First time it appeared and then when the next episode updated) but it is still up. I even described the tells that made it AI but that didn't seem to work.

absolutely. It could be flawed, but as long as there are ways to work around said flaws, it should work. Perhaps if the margin of error is wide enough, like if a piece of art has an above 50 percent chance of being AI, then they shoot it down. That should hopefully lead to less issues that could come with such a tool

I don't want to be supporting creators that steal from other artists, and that's exactly what AI does- so yeah- would appreciate being able to tell whether someone's using AI in their stories or not, both with writing and art. I'm not sure whether Tapas (or other webcomic sharing sites/apps) are gonna care though, they're probably profiting off of it, and as much as I'd like to believe Tapas cares about us creators- it's hard to when so many companies are promoting use of AI so heavily rn, especially technology companies and social media sites.

Being a novel writer, I had a super hard time in making the cover and took me 3 days in making that. So, I suppose, Tapas should allow ai generated banners and covers to novel writers but with a tag (ai generated) and not to comic writers.
