Personally I am against art schools because they do not prepare you for the real world - sure, your portfolio looks amazing but most grads can't even write a decent cover letter and are lacking communication skills. Also, most art schools are scams IMO. They promise you careers but they won't help you find one.
What I recommend is that you go to a standard 4 year university, where you are forced to take core classes (non-major classes to help you have a well-rounded understanding about some other aspects of the world... like math and literature). Sure, be an art major. Maybe a minor, so you have core classes if you're a little iffy, and then do something STEM.
Public schools would be better because who wants to take out a HUGE loan in this job climate? Do you know how long it will take to pay back a 50K loan with a <50K/yr salary? And then, when you've finally paid off everything at the age of 40, you have to start saving for retirement. Think about that.
Also, guess what! Even if you go to a public 4 year uni, majoring in Art would be rough too. If you want an inkling of a job prospect, go into graphic design, so that you can take basic art classes but also have some design skills on hand. Most of us will have to keep our day job and do art on side!
Just my 2+ cents.
