[image] Hey guys! Just wanted to spread the word about an upcoming Comics & Illustrations Exhibit at the SF Public Library. APAture is an art & music showcase by Kearny Street Workshop that highlights emerging Asian Pacific American artists. It's a month long festival and the comics/illustrations…
Surprise update! I've been away for much too long. I hadn't been reading a whole lot as of late because I had a baby, but here's what I got my hands on. Keep in mind, I do audio books so that I can ink while reading (multi tasking!): Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Stephen Fry…
I'm local and didn't know there was a SFCC... I'll be at SF Zine Fest, so if you guys wrap up early on Sunday, swing by Golden Gate Park!
Not really hate mail, but when I first published chapter 4 of Dead Man's Party on SmackJeeves I received a comment about how it was sexist. I ignored it because DUDE! These people died a looooong time ago when sexism wasn't even an idea. HECK, WOMEN COULDN'T EVEN VOTE WHEN THIS PERSON DIED. (side no…
Deb Aoki just instigated a very heated discussion on this topic a few days ago on Twitter. Very interesting responses from people, you should check it out. Personally I don't do fan art a whole lot because I feel like I am desecrating the IP, but some people do VERY NICE fan art. Plus, fan art onl…
The Alternative Press Expo is happening this weekend at the San Jose Convention Center! Previously it was held is San Francisco under Comic-Con International's management, but this year it will be hosted by Dan Vado. So there's going to be a lot of new artists this year. Will you be there? If you …
Healthcare in the US. It is wrong that people have to go to Mexico to get dental work done because it's too expensive in America. It is wrong that pharma companies can buy rights and increase the price of a medicine FOR AIDS, that's been in circulation since the 1950s, by 5000%. It is wrong th…
What are you talking about? I'm EFFING amazeballs. Yea, that's right, I said it. I draw good. I mean, if I didn't think it was good, why would I bother showing it to other people? I put my stuff online because "hey, look at this cool stuff I made," not, "hey, I know I suck but give me pity compli…
One of my characters in Dead Man's Party wears one because he has trouble breathing. The idea is that the world that they live in was originally unsuitable for life; the character, being old, is not coping well with his environment. In all seriousness, gas masks, eye patches, bandages, and, to a …
@AnnaLandin If you liked Neverwhere, you should listen to the BBC radioplay version. It's amazeballs - James McAvoy as Richard Mayhew, Natalie Dormer as Door, and Bananaboat Cucumber as Angel Islington!!!!
@AnnaLandin I enjoyed The Ocean, it was like the Graveyard Book in that it seemed less "grown up" and had a dreamy quality to it. American Gods was weird and entertaining but the climax went a little flat for me. I still have to read the Monarch Of The Glen to see if it gives me any closure.
Since my last update, I finished The Ocean At The End Of The Lane (Gaiman) and American Gods (again, Gaiman)! Right now I'm half way through DUNE. Because classics, gotta read em all.
Well, clearly you've never had a watermelon, tomato, feta, and mint/basil salad because that stuff is amazeballs.
Each chapter in my comic, Dead Man's Party, is inspired by a song. Chapter 1 is inspired by Finch's "Reduced To Teeth" Chapter 2 is inspired by Thrice's "Trust" Chapter 3 is inspired by Bump Of Chicken's "Dandelion" (not on YouTube - this one is a Japanese pop rock song) Aesthetics? Buck Tick's …
Cool! See you there!
Hey guys! I was wondering if any of your will be at SFZF this year? It's a free event at the SF County Fair Event Center and will be open to the public. I will be having a half table; is anybody else tabling or visiting?
Transformers: Dark Side Of The Moon. I want my money back. Leprechaun 4: Lep In The Hood. It was on during a St. Patrick's Day party, couldn't take my eyes off of it because it was so bad.
There's a subreddit for that called r/ComicWriting
Storyline and character development should go hand in hand. Some examples from various mediums: Tenjo Tenge by Oh! Great is a manga with BEAUTIFUL art and ZERO story. I stopped reading at volume 18. Should've quit at like, 4... This tends to go for all of his long form works, because his short …
[image] Here's several renditions of my comic, Dead Man's Party!
I've had the story for Dead Man's Party in my head since high school (2000~2001)! At first it was just an illustration collection of the 72 Spirits of Solomon. Back then, the main character was a demon in a top hat called Mephistopheles. Eventually I go to college and read more books and realize …
Well it's a little more than a "fetish" when droves and droves of people draw and write it. On the funny side, have you guys seen this Graham Norton episode where he shows the X-men actors their yaoi fanart? It's so cringey IT'S AMAZING.
not to be that person but I very much dislike BL/yaoi. It's just a fetishization. I think it's rude to people who are actually gay! Also, have any of the artists ever seen a real gay couple before? Take a walk in the Castro and I well bet you five bucks that none of them look like a BL couple. Shees…
Hey guys! I'm not sure if any of you are into shoujo manga (manga aimed at a younger female demographic), but I just saw this Kickstarter for Sparkler Monthly. Sparkler Monthly is, unlike Tapastic, a curated comic site. They do monthly anthologies much like Japanese publishers, and need help raising…
Aw, thanks for the shoutout @joannekwan!
I have been using a pen name because I was originally drawing comics for a Japanese audience. I didn't want people to rate my work as "pretty good for a gaijin (foreigner)" - I'm half Japanese but my last name is foreign. So I made a pen name out of my husband's last name + Cheezburgers (I was reall…
Plenty of people can't draw but have amazing stories. It is common in mainstream comics, why would indie comics be excluded? What matters is that you have an good product. Now, if you demand free work from an artist just because you're cheap, that makes you an arsehole and nobody likes working wit…
Audio books. I am an audiobook fiend. Right now I'm listening to Neil Gaiman's American Gods. So I haven't really bored as of late!
CONFLICT. We want conflict. Juicy, juicy inner turmoil. A character who simply breezes through obstacles is plain boring. I feel like recent YA books forget this, and they tend to fall flat when in comparison with classics like Ender's Game. Manga (particularly of the Shonen demo) if guilty of th…
I have a generic outline for the chapters coming. Then I draw a rough draft of the next chapter (called a name in manga). I don't really write scripts out, I let the characters do their thing and let the words and events form organically.
