Please share any diverse comics/literature you have here. I'm looking to read (and hopefully subscribe) to series that feature diverse characters, especially people of colour (BIPOC). Also happy to read any stories with:

  • Characters identifying as LGBTQIA+
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Any other underrepresented or marginalized groups
  • Comics/novels by creators living outside North America (I will still read things written in NA, just want to expand my horizons to creators in other countries)

There used to be a great creators of colour section on the front page briefly while the BLM protests were happening last summer, but Tapas has removed it. The whole conversation about diversity and uplifting underrepresented voices last year has pretty much disappeared from Tapas, which is sad because I found so many interesting stories.

To me, diversity is not a fad or something one does once a month or occasionally. Community building and uplifting diverse voices is an everyday action if we genuinely want a more welcoming, inclusive, equitable, and just world. It also takes a lot of courage, learning, and an open heart. Looking forward to checking your stuff out! Thanks for reading my post.

(P.S.: Please keep your comments civil and be respectful to other Tapas users. Racist, homo/transphobic, or any other ignorant comments aimed at minorities will not be tolerated)

Edit: I will do my best to read every single post.

Edit 2 March 4: I am still reading posts and I don't care how long it's going to take, I'm reading ALL of them! IDC! IDC! Also: y'all are awesome, thank you for your contributions.

Edit 3, March 4: I'm still reading! I might not respond to all comments here because I'm leaving likes/comments/subscribes on your page instead. Also realizing that in less than 24 hours, we've created our own diversity "front page" in this thread. To date, there are 48 contributions.

Edit 4, March 26: Work got busy recently but I'm back and the thread is still open! Will be reading more.

Hm, I don't think I'm exactly what you're looking for (though if you'd like, my story is linked to my profile) but here goes a link to the Black Creators thread from last summer. Lots of really amazing artists and authors.

Edit: This one too (lol) LGBT+ and POC creators

My comic is very diverse! The main duo are Latino, and the supporting characters are Asian and African American. One of the main duo is also disabled! And everyone is gay!
I personally am Hispanic mixed, and also gay

All my comics have black male leads

I might be the series you're looking for though I don't know. My story has multiple leads that are BIPOC (too many count) with two LGBTOC support/main characters who are both hispanic. One of them also struggles with finding a new faith. I don't know if this will tempt you but I hope it fits your criteria :))

My comic is very much Diverse with different types of people :grinning:

The first two characters that have been showed are of African Decent the episodes 1-4 are merely what some of the character look like to have an idea of what you are in for hehe

Thanks! But the post is from June 2020 (when the BLM protests were happening), and it was helpful back then. I'm searching again now because I haven't seen anything new from Tapas in this regard recently, and there used to be a creators of colour section which has now disappeared.

I'm hoping to find more diverse content for 2021 and any other cool stuff I might've missed out on!

Ah. Well a lot of the people on these lists are still active. But I'm gonna tag in @foxnflames for sure in that case. They're a personal favorite. I'll let them share their own works.

(Love that you're doing this btw, so I'm totally going to stalk this thread, haha)

Here is a thread of people showing their Diversity in their Novels/Comics in this thread here

All of my stories do!

Finding work - POC main cast, features a dark-skinned woman from the desert looking for work in Dravensprot. Deals with systemic racism.

The Shopkeeper - Main character is nonbinary

Brooders - This story's main plot is a character discovering she's trans

Lady Forista - Forista is VERY gay for her big buff lady mercenary.

All of these stories can be found below!

Well that's kinda my forte. I mean POC and LGBT main leads and casts is what I usually do by default at this point so. Yeah those threads are good places to look through for stuff that fits what you're looking for

Oh yeah... I still remember a thread asking to bring it back as a permeant feature and people complained on that thread as it apparently made white creators feel left out or something about it being rascist smh. Some people

WELL

(Also @alexlcuri07 I was already about to plug myself haha)

If you want some literature featuring BIPOC, then I’m your fox. You get black leads, a queer cast, historical realness, and some spooks. This story is gothic horror with some twists.

If you’re also in the mood for some more historical vibes, this is my other story, an all indigenous cast.

Hello there!

Well, I think my recent work can fill some of these topics:

We're from outside North America, our main characters are LGBTQIA+ and they do have some disabilities.

Genre: Fantasy, Action, LGBTQIA+, Adventure, BL

It's still at the beginning, but I hope it suits your liking.

Oh I love this idea!

I love writing diversity and intersectionality so this threat is right up my alley

I've got:

  • Korean characters in Korea
  • Korean-Nigerian character
  • Korean-American character
  • Autism/Neurodiversity rep!
  • and, LGBTQA+ rep (though gender in omegaverse makes it a bit different)

My sci-fi webcomic series is set in the future West Asia-ish land (It's a fictional place :D). Hence, majority of my characters are African, West Asian and multiracial. It's not revealed yet in the story though there are queer characters too.

And yes! Diversity is with us. It's not something shown occasionally. We need to make it more visible because that's really how the world looks like!

Oh please allow me to jump in! I have a very diverse cast of characters in my stories! Let me walk you through them! First of all, my biggest thing has been Frontier-0! It's a fun sci-fi space opera a la Mass Effect meets Star Wars, if you will lol. The lead character is Captain Lily (Also Korean name Eun Nari), a bisexual Korean bounty hunter with a sword! Her second mate is Astor Roy, a Latino man with a shady past (and a monster girlfriend lol)! We explore their origins, as well as the other main characters in my Origins comic (which is completed) and you can read it here! Also, there's also a short exploring Calavera (a badass Mexican hunter who has a crush on Lily and it's super cute ^^

And Lily's story continues in the spin off novella I'm writing right now, also available here on Tapas, exploring her first major gig with her crew of bounty hunters! Including her familial drama and her rivalry with the only only other space pirate with a sword lol.

And finally, if I may interest in my latest work, just finished the firs issue of my new fantasy comic, Santa Fae! It's Batman meets Lord Of The Rings! As two elvish knights (one gay the other Latina) have to solve a murder and stop a conspiracy of villains with bigger plans for the magical city of Santa Fae! ^^ I hope any of those grab your attention ^^

P.S: There's an animated pilot for Frontier-0 on my website you can watch for free if it interest you all. If you read it, you'll probably want to know what happens so just in case, here's the link ^^

I am very amazed that you are able to type that fast :astonished:
I am intrigue of your series I shall check em out later :triumph:
:sparkling_heart: :fire::sparkling_heart::sparkles:

Tapas did feature black creators as a part of Black History Month which just ended, although the words around it is not really hyped. Last year I think Tapas also features Hispanic creators.

I do not know if my series qualify because it is fantasy and set in another world, surely the racial and sociopolitical dynamic is very different. However, I took many influences from supernatural mythologies of my own cultures and incorporated them in this.

I'd say that comics not made in North America is hardly an unrepresented group. I think it's more likely that you've come across them but have not noticed.

Here are some comics that I hope you'll enjoy...

My own comic - Australia.
It has some romance between two girls but it's not meant as an LGBT vehicle.

Apricot Cookie(s) - UK

Brother Complex - Chile

Well, I've been effectively called out, lol.

Lacuna has a BIPOC and an LGBT cast in an action / light fantasy setting, with a heavy focus on people with mental disabilities as well. I'm still not sure it's what you're looking for, but maybe it is. :sweat_02:

Dear god, do I ever love the colours in your art. How you portray so many different skintones is amazing! I read the first one or two chapters of each--subscribed to all of them!

Hello there! I'm from Europe (the Netherlands). I have two novels right now, one sci-fi that starts out in NA but doesn't really stay there for long and one BL set partly in France and the UK that I'm writing mostly as a more fun project but touches lightly on a few heavier subjects. I try to keep it light most of the time tho.

@carloswebcomic - you're right, non-North American works are probably fairly common on here. That's why I made sure to try and make this clear in the first two sentences of my post by calling them "diverse", and made a distinction between them and marginalized groups (I belong to a marginalized group). Plus, as you've correctly pointed out, it's not always so obvious who is from where on Tapas. So I created this post to see what's out there and let some of those creators shine.

Hey there! Thank you for this thread!! I am a BIPOC Code Monkey who has a story starring a woman of color with one arm who is the leader of a Mafia Family. The family is diverse and the story does delve into mental illness, trauma, and super powers.

I hope you have a chance to check it out

I am a PoC (South East Asian), LGBT+, disabled creator, working on a comic that features all of these things. Though I do live in NA (not the USA) I'm from an immigrant family. Not sure if that matter or not when it comes to the circumstances of my location.

Though the lead character isn't obviously disabled, his narrative is, as I tried to make the experience more broad and like an allegory so that it would be more relatable to general readers, I also didn't want my story to be considered inspiration porn which is a category a lot narratives around disability will be thrown under even when the intent isn't intentional. In the story it's framed as 'this character has a count down to his death and is surrounded by gods with powers and abilities he cannot do' it's a mirror to how my disabilities limit what I can do compared to everyone else around me, and how I need to depend on other people, as well as how my disability significantly shortens my lifespan and will eventually be the cause of my death.

The cast is large, with a lot of characters having different ethnicities, gender identities and sexualities.

The beginning the English may be a little off, my English has gotten better over the years though (I hope), I really need to go back and fix it but it's hard to find the free time to do so as I try to update this daily, as well, I kind of want to be able to finish the story before I lose the ability to draw because of my health.

Diversity is always a goal I strive for in my stories! I have lots of diverse character designs, a heavily LGBTQ+ cast with a variety of identities, and characters with mental illnesses, autism, and ADHD. I like to draw inspiration from both my own experiences in the areas I'm marginalized as well as many of my friends to create a vibrant and varied cast.

OMG YOO I DIDN"T REALIZED YOU MADE NO FUTURE wow your comic was actually one of the first comics I've read and had actually gotten into it , it had also open doors for me TuT

:sparkling_heart:

Hi, I'm a black creator. My four main characters are all LGBTQ+. All the magical beings in my story are all based on different cultures around the world, not just Eurocentric ones. I only have the prologue now but I hope you enjoy it!

I'm a novelist from Asia (SEA) and a lot of my characters or cultural settings are based in Asia. :heart_03: I think it's great to have this thread and I hope more diverse voices can be heard!

Genre: Drama, Mystery, Psychological Thriller
Unravel the secrets hidden in a small town through the eyes of a singer, a policeman, and a school counselor. Suspects in the subsequent murders range from cyber stalkers to old flames! :smiling_imp:

Genre: Historical Romance, Fantasy
Follow Empress Wu Zetian's treacherous journey from the hands of enemy Tufan soldiers back to the Forbidden City where she battles foes from within her own kingdom.

Genre: Scifi, Action, Thriller
A short story collection that involves science fiction, fast-paced action scenes, and dystopic universes.

Here's my comic Forced!
around 90% of my characters are LGBTQIA+ (including the entire main cast), there's also lot of POC and disabled characters (though it will be several months til the whole extended cast is introduced), and the comic also addresses trauma and mental health.

Of my 2 main characters Dana (left) is black and pansexual and Daryl (right) is aromantic-asexual

Hey there! I hope our comic is similar to what you're looking for  Our comic is an LGBT+ romance/drama taking place in New York City. All of our characters are LGBT+ and a good majority of them are POC.
Our main character, Nikola Hyland, is a pansexual Latino man who works as a model/influencer, but is trying to find his real purpose in life. (He's a little bit of a himbo and way too optimistic for his own good, but we love him anyway )
We just came back from a hiatus and plan on updating regularly this year, so please check us out if you're interested!
Also, we're co-creators, one of us is in the US and the other is in Australia :eyes:
