I haven't read ElfQuest but it's on my list of comics to read right after I finish Usagi Yojimbo, the original b/w run of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Bone.

When you get to NT # 8, google Cerebus the Aardvark by Dave Sim to understand the in jokes there.
Also a good comic, but it's complicated....

Haven't read any of it since I got these books back in the mid-80's.

I remember really liking it at the time but having a hard time finding anything after these. I actually found these in a grocery store, my local comic shop at the time never carried them.

Most of the old comics can actually be read for free in digital format on the Elfquest site (elfquest.com), although the more recent stuff (especially Final Quest, which only came out a few years ago) you'd still have to buy in print.

The world definitely gets "bigger" after the Kings of the Broken wheel arc, with lots more characters introduced, and the stories get darker and more complex over time. Still, if you remember it fondly from your childhood, I do think it's worth checking out to find out what happens!
