Are Cartoonists artists too?

Are cartoonists and artists separate or are they a part of being an artist?

For example, I like Charles Schulz, the creator of Peanuts, and his comics were very popular that time, he's called a cartoonist but I don't know if he is considered as an artist as well. Or maybe they're the same thing?

(And when I think of the word (visual) "artist," I think of a person painting on a canvas with his colour pallete wearing a white suit, it's kinda weird...)

They're definitely artists! A big part of comics is the art, and although comic artists may be labeled "cartoonists" it doesn't mean they're not artists - cartoonists are just a subsection of artists. Kind of like how you might label someone a "painter" or "illustrator". (:

Absolutely cartoonists are artists! We make cool stuff and we're poor.

...but for a more serious answer, cartooning still carries a stigma of being a sort of "low" art. This has been broken down more and more over the years, but it's hard to say if it'll ever really get equal footing with painting, literature, etc. It's sad and unjustified, but at least we have the nice company of video games and comedy.

Doesn't mean cartoonists shouldn't be considered artists, but if you have doubts about it, that cultural stance is probably why.

Yes, they are artists, of course! Although I don't consider myself a cartoonist, but a comic artist and confusing the two bothers me a bit, because it's inaccurate.

Think about the beauty of conveying jokes visually in a single drawing or just very few panels: that takes art. And what about stories with a plot: That takes a lot of skills and interdisciplinary skills: good writing and a great eye that only filmakers develop. Yay for comic artists and cartoonists!

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Yes, cartoonists are definitely artists. They are using art - specifically visual art - to communicate ideas with other people, which is kind of the basic idea of art in general. Just because they draw cartoons - or comics - doesn't mean that what they do isn't art; it definitely is. It's not the most highly respected form of art, but it is definitely art.

All cartoonists are artists, but not all artists are cartoonists! : )

Artists paint, draw, sculpt, perform, speak and create.

Artists are musicians, visual, poets, writers, dancers and writers.

Any art performed by people are artist to me, weither you paint, illustrate manga ,draw cartoons , write poems, make jewelry and other crafts and so on (:

If this is art then cartoonists are definately artists.

A cartoonist's work is really just a difference in visual style, in the same way that manga is a different visual style from other comics. Cartoonists don't even necessary be exclusively comedy driven, a serious story could be told using a cartoony sort of style. You could even combine two styles, one example being Jeff Smith's Bone which combines very cartoony looking characters with more realistic humanoid characters.

cartoonist is what you tell someone when they ask what kind of art you do and you don't want to get into details. So many stupid inane conversations have been avoided by saying I am a cartoonist. It's a word that most don't understand but would feel silly to question.

Cartoonists/ Comicartists Express their feelings by drawing
so whatever they do, even if it's a doodle, it's art.
musicians are artists, Game programmers are artists, architects are artists,

because everyone of them puts a bit of their personality into their work.

Cartoonists are definitely artists! Anyone who creates something is an artist!

I went to college to study art, specifically illustration, but there were a lot of different kinds of artists around. Of course there were "fine artists" like what you're thinking of who do oil paintings on canvas and all that... but there were also sculptors, animators, people who worked with metal and glass, photographers, directors, poets, jewelry makers, fashion designers, print makers, graphic designers, musicians, singers, playwrights, authors, book binders, dancers, choreographers, and actors! And even cartoonists, haha.

There are so many ways to express yourself as an artist, there's no one specific type of artist who defines the term
