I'm another who just never really got into them as a kid. I was never really exposed to any of those comics, none of my friends read them either, so it kinda just skipped over me lol. I did have some idea of what they were like from the various animated series on TV, though.
Around middle school is where I started looking into graphic novels and more plot oriented shows and I came to prefer shonen manga/anime to western super heroes. It was never that I found them too tropey or "silly" (especially when I was younger and barely understood those concepts xD) but for whatever reason I never was really drawn in by the types of powers/scenarios super heroes tended to have. There seemed to be a lot of super strength and basic hand-to-hand combat with punches and stuff. Meanwhile a lot of anime series airing on TV at the time, as well as many of the first manga I bought had a lot of cool over the top magic-y abilities and fights that had a lot of interesting dynamics due to the clashing of those types of powers. Naruto was the super popular one on TV at the time, but I was also a huge fan of shows like Zatch Bell, and some of the first Manga series I bought were like MAR, +Anima, & Dragon Drive.
Nowadays I've had my first proper introduction to traditional super heroes via the wave of movies that have been coming out and enjoy them quite a bit more than I did as a kid. It's been kind of eye opening that there are a lot of different heroes and powers I never even knew about. And several of my current friends are really into the comics as well so I've learned some from them xD;;
