Are there any things you're tired of seeing in comics?

Been reading this topic for a while, I'm interested in people's comic pet peeves.

Generally if I don't like a comic, I won't read it. However there are some things in comics that disinterest me more than others. Like a lot of people, I dislike comics that are pretty but don't have a story. I've read some comics which had nice art, but I had no idea where the story was going to go, and the comic's site had no info to help me figure it out. Reading a webcomic is a long term investment for me, since I'm a principled creature of habit, and if it's not grabbing me I'll just move on.

There are some tropes I see in comics that I'd rather not. Characters who are "funny perverts," tokenism and stereotyped characters, comics that are dialogue heavy without much action, ect.

Otherwise though, I've got a good sense of what kind of comic id like to read and what I wouldn't, and even though there are plenty of Webcomics out there, I trust in my ability to filter and find the comics I'm most interested in reading.

If you can draw, but can't write (and if you haven't studied writing, you probably can't write well), team up with someone who can.

If someone wants to do something that they're not good at, be it writing or art or whatever,

don't tell them to stop doing it.

Tell them to learn how to do it better. Better yet, offer to actually teach them/ give them tips, if you are more skilled than they.

I fully agree with you on the importance of writing, but "you suck at ___, so you should just stop doing it" is not constructive at all.

Please, I have no desire to beat a dead horse. Most of this thread has been pointing out bad writing, and in some cases, how to fix it. Check my posting history on this, or any other forum, and I am constantly offering advice where needed. I have done more script and comic review/critiques in the last two months than I can count, and have another two scripts in my inbox to go through, in addition to the two that have been submitted for publication on my site. I'm involved in two different comic script swap rings for the very purpose of helping people. I've even written three scripts for people for free in the last 6 weeks. My writing might not be the best in the world, but my knowledge of writing techniques and skills is something that I pass out freely to anyone who wants it, in addition to pointing them in the right direction for additional resources. I do my part, and more. Anyone who has dealt with me can tell you that I am generous with my time, resources, and skills.
And please don't twist my words around. When all else fails, the best thing to do, if you want to create comics, is find someone who has skills you lack. I'm unable to draw to the level of consistency that my OCD requires for a comic, and that is after countless hours trying to develop the skill, with some very good artists trying to help. I can draw a nice, pleasing face, and make money off of selling it, but not the same face from different angles without photographic references. Just a skill that I have never been able to master. I don't sweat it, I simply find ways to cover my weakness, which includes the advice I gave above.

Back to the topic at hand, though....for me, there aren't too many things I'm sick of. I'd like to think I'm pretty genre savvy, (mostly because of the disgusting amount of time I've spent on TV tropes and Idioms...), and I've come to see that (almost) any trope can be used well and surprise me, even if I've seen it a thousand times.

That being said, I'm tired of seeing sexual harassment played off as a joke, or worse, as flattery. If I never see another panty shot again, I'll be happy.

I'll be blunt having a 'what I don't like about comics thread' in comics community is toxic. Believe me.

2 years ago I was on a wedding planning forum when a 'what don't you like about weddings thread' popped up and ooooooooh booooooooy. The flames! Hell itself rose up and claimed the forums. Its a toxic idea, it maybe of been for fun to start with BUT someone WILL take offence, feelings WILL be hurt and sh*t will go down.

At this point, I think this thread needs a lock down because its no longer fun nor constructive.

Things I'm tired of seeing in webcomics:

All these webcomics on Tapastic that are "featured" or are "trending" which are just plain self insert slice of life webcomics more or less.

Webcomics that have walls of text

"gaming" webcomics for the most part because of their dime a dozen status

So I started this forum a few days ago and I didn't think it would get... Intense. My intent was just to point out some stuff that is overdone in comics, and how we could FIX THEM. For example, I am a sucker for love triangles which are found in almost every story nowadays, but I like seeing people's unique twists on them. I'm extremely upset that people want this forum shut down. I just wanted everyone to come together as a community and help each other out. : (

If you have been hurt by anyone's opinion on this forum, I just wanted to say that you are a precious human being and your opinion is important. Don't let anyone deter you from making comics.

no no no no not the forum just 'flamey' threads. I used to be an admin on another site. if a thread got rather to heated we'd 'close it down and hose it down' and people would disperse and make new thread about different things.

And yeah I know your intentions were pure and i could see what you were trying to dicuss but sometimes it can get super heated on a public forum when it comes to personal opnions and before long it starts to look like 2 politicains slinging mud at a debate. Ideal it would be nice if people would agree to disagree and continue a nice formal debate but alas ...

There's a question. A lot of people listed love triangles (which one person pointed out were actually Love V's), but you're stating you like them. I've got a love V that turns into a love triangle coming in one of my titles. How have you seen them used that worked?

Oh god, yes... can't stand that. On that note, can we please kill off the joke where "girl is worried she might get harassed/groped/ect, nothing happens, at first she's relieved but then starts getting self-conscious about if she isn't "good enough" for that" ugggh

As for what I'm tired of seeing... I can't think of a lot of stuff, really. Some stuff might be a bit overdone but it's all about whether it's written good or bad.

Been binge reading a few comics today. Please, when you post filler art, such as "On vacation", Guest art that is not part of the continuity, or "Thank you 100th subscriber", please move it after you get the next page or so up. It breaks up the story, and throws me smack out of it.

I don't like to see on comics:

-Fanservice: characters dressed with sexualized costumes, or exagerating body parts to sexualize the characters

The hyper-sexualization of female characters in the comics world in general gets on my nerves. One of my favorite comic artists of all time was Arthur Adams and I can't even look at most of his recent work because it just looks like porn stars in superhero costumes. Sad, and juvenile. As for the Splash page thing, I use a lot of them and I also have a pretty low panel count per page. Why? Because a webcomic is NOT a 22 page traditional American comic, it has an infinite "page count" and you can do comics very differently in this medium without those traditional restrictions. I love the pretty art! To each his own!
