Asking for free art and moochers

Huh, didn't know that. My state doesn't do state income tax so it's whatever federal says for us. And at least according to last year's tax laws for Federal it's $15,000 now (higher than I originally thought- shows the last time I looked).

But again, if your state doesn't have that law and you aren't getting gifts in excess of 15K for the federal side, then for many artist they want to just keep it as a "gift" so they don't have to pay taxes because you don't have to report it until you meet a certain threshold. Not saying it's right, just saying that's a big reason why.

hey hey...hey don't lump us all together. i've simply asked for someone who was bored or wanted to work on their art work before. (I was recently linked to this post because apparently that's rude) I'm just saying that i love seeing someone have fun with my characters. I never have requirements because of their generosity.and I would NEVER say "draw this" Talent doesn't come free. But if they are bored. No matter the skill level..if they FEEL like doing it for free..then yes I'm jumping all over that. and of course giving them credit.

You know, I saw your post and thought it was fine. It might seem contradictory because I made this thread. But I think that Tired programmer had a very reasonable approach, not all the requests for art are bad and if they are polite, then just ignore them if it is not something you want to do.

I was certainly more annoyed at posts that were becoming spammy. Some users were requesting artists to draw their OC in unrelated posts and being very entitled. Some offered collaborations/employment which basically was a way to say "draw my comic for free". Those make me mad enough to respond to them!
I understand why some users get tired at seeing the unpaid requests and I understand that many of us get very defensive about this and why you got this thread recommended.

Your post was simply offering your work for practice (fanart) and you were very clear that you had no expectations. I didn't felt like you were taking advantage of others disguising the request as a great deal.

I will keep complaining about bad deals and people who take advantage of artists because some of them are certainly outrageous but I will be less triggered too about this topic because it is not fair to label everyone as a moocher.
