Yep, precisely! And in a community as friendly as this one, it's great to meet new artists!
Getting in the comic industry is relatively easy, however, getting to be in a good company is usually harder. I started working in the American market as next-to-a-slave for Dynamite (terrible schedules and pay reallllly little. I stopped working there because they LITERALLY forgot I existed after a change in the staff), but once you're there, going up is really easy, so, you can always gather a portfolio and give it a shot
There are also many editorials that hold contests to allow independent authors to present their comics. You'd still be your own boss, but get money since you're at it, haha.
What I do in cons is sit in my table, await for people to pass by looking at my comic and give them some talk about whatever random thing I notice (badges, shirts, anything really) and that piques their interest. Generally speaking, if you make anyone laugh or have something in common with them, it's almost a guaranteed sell/fan/insert intent here. You can then give them your website, and, voilà! A fan!
Giving away flyers is way harder, because people are a lot more reluctant to grab them, and it's a lot harder to make a good impression. The internet's pretty good for advertising though, indeed, because you still have the chance to make fans out of being nice
