Best advertising that you ever paid for?

I'm just starting out and wondered if anyone has tried paid advertising that really worked out for them? Is online advertising the only sensible route or have people on here also tried print advertising / other avenues?

I know that statistically, it's actually a lot better to just give the author money through platforms like Patreon and that authors typically get more money from that kind of support than from ad revenue.

I think OP is talking about paying to place an ad for your comic -- like putting your comic in the ads on TWC or buying adspace through Project Wonderful!

When I asked my readers where they'd found my comic, a decent number of them said they'd found me through an ad, and the only paid advertising I'd ever used was advertising on fellow comics' pages through Project Wonderful -- so while I never saw an EXPLOSION OF READERSHIP or anything from them, it seems like they definitely worked to reach a some dedicated readers!
It's been several years since I paid for anything, though, so I can't speak to anything other than: NEVER pay for ads on Facebook.

Top Web Comics runs contests with advertising as a prize occasionally. I'm running an ad with them this month and I've already seen my daily views pretty much quadruple, so that's pretty sweet =D A bit pricey, but good advertising is.

Fourthing Top Webcomics. Numbers: One of my comics averages about a thousand hits a month. Bought two weeks worth of the little sponsor ads for it last month and almost hit 7000.

I did the Top Web Comics square ads. They were 15 dollars for like a month and every day I would see quite a few new visitors for my comic. You can also try and enter contests on their site. Sometimes you can get a participation award and earn 15 days of advertisement with TWC.
