Over a year ago, I did make a thread similar to this one. This time, I wanted to make the topic a little more broad and not just about screen tones (which is also why I didn't include specific dpi settings).
I've drawn my comic at two sizes, ever since I started drawing it digitally in 2021: 300 to 350 for colored pages, and 600 for greyscale pages, which is a majority of my comic. Now I've got a lot of conflicting responses for that last one when I bring it up. Either they'll give me the thumbs up, saying 600 is perfect for greyscale pages, or they'll shreak in horror that I'm drawing at such a size. I know that last response has to do with 600 dpi requiring better hardware which my pc is equipped with, so that hasn't been a source of worry.
As of October, I've been considering working at a slightly lower dpi for black and white pages and ditching 600 dpi for good. And it goes beyond screen tones and hardware issues. In general, Im used to working at a lower image resolution, and in fact I only draw at 600 dpi when working on my comic. Most of the time, I'll draw at 300, 350 or sometimes 450. So whenever I do draw at 600 for comic pages, it always feels weird drawing because of the drastic jump in resolution. Its not a pleasant experience and it does take a lot of the relaxing qualities away from drawing, as I have to adjust my drawing and inking style to fit the higher resolution. Working on my comic's latest update was super difficult because of this, as I hadn't worked at 600dpi since late March when I started work on episode 9 back in August. There's also the fact that sometimes I cant even save the file Im working on regularly. I dont know if this applies to other drawing programs, but there is a limit to how large a psd file can be in order for it to be saved as one. And I've crossed that line multiple times when working at 600. Its not like Im doing anything crazy, for the most part. I'd usually do what I would do at a lower dpi, but I guess is too big for a regular psd. Whenever this happens, I would get an error notice asking if I wanted to save it as a larger psd file. I didnt actually read the error for most of these cases so I would click no, leading to the file being unable to be saved regularly. As in, my only way to save it was through "Save As", as if original file had deleted itself. This has proved to be quite annoying and it would probably be worse if I had been drawing these pages in full color.
These two reasons (plus another reason which is more of a peet peeve than anything) are for my next upcoming updates, I want to draw at 450dpi to see if its a worthy substitute. For me, its a good middle ground between 300 and 600, and could serve a good alternative. So far the pages Im working on at that size haven't been inked yet so I cant confirm if its a good substitute or not. And I am open for any suggestions or looking at it with a different perspective
