Most of the comics I read these days don't really use stylized sound effects which I think has affected my sound effect game.

So show me some sound effects! Do you use description sound effects or do you make up your own sounds? Do you like typing it or do you draw them by hand?

I love onomatopopeias, I´m obsessed with them.
I use some that I know from comics that i read and I create new ones for unusual or
specific sound

I tend to use a mix of onomatopoeias and more literal sound effects, depending on what I feel gets the idea across best. I mostly use specific fonts for them, although I do occasionally handwrite them - usually for softer sounds. I also try to make sure I'm keeping a sound effect for a specific thing consistent, so whatever the sound is for a weapon bouncing off a force barrier or a portal opening, I try to keep those similar so they're more recognizable to my readers.

Onomatopoeia are fun. And I used to like creating my own sounds too until a friend thought they were lines of dialogue lol

I like that sound! That does sound like an arrow through the chest. I also like how you did the sound curling over the character.

Oh I like these very nice. I like how you vary the fonts and styles. Very harmonious with your art. Also consistency in sound effects is a good idea! I'll keep that in mind.

Gosh I hate onomatopoeias I love them when they are done by professional mangakas, those guys know they stuff, like One Punch Man (Murata's), pure joy to look at those effects. Me, I still almost always hesitate when putting them on the page. For Hexameron I usually write them myself, since there's a lot of ruggedy sounds that are easier for me to create.

For other comics it depends, most frequently I look at the font and try to use it as a base, changing it freehand to suit the situation better.

I like handwriting my sound effects because it gives me a lot of control over the style and effect they have for readers. I don't have the fanciest sound effects, but I find them fun to stylise

I think I've used exactly 1 sound effect in my comic making career

I guess I personally prefer a more cinematic style, so I like using more discreet ways to communicate sound (like in some manga, outside the panel you have 'SFX: [insert sound effect here]')

I really like the sobbing one! I think handdrawn effects are neat. They always flows well with the characters. I want to try them but I never like my lettering

The sketchiness of the EEEEEEEEs really expresses a lot! I also like the monochrome ones with the red text. It really makes it stand out!

That's an interesting technique. Never thought to have the sound effects separate from the panel. I could see it flowing well with certain styles. Like you said, more cinematic.

Ooo I love the wavy one. I've been experimenting with motion blur on some effects but I wasn't really sure if I love the look. Definitely need to experiment with waves!

Thought I'd revive this thread with some of my own examples.

Still experimenting with what works for me. I think varying the letter sizes is what makes it look more like a sound effect. That's probs a lot easier if you draw your sound effects by hand. Unfortunately my handwriting is just too ugly

Been using a lot of CCBiffBam and Permanent Marker Pro for my sound effect fonts.
