Bilingual Comics

Haha, I was hoping there would be something here on Tapatsic- but now that you mention having such a comic, I can't wait for it! Thereby I assume you are bilingual (at least) in Japanese and English and have thus become jealous.

Also, I've been to Japan and I'm in Korea now, figuring out how I'll be living in Japan soon- so it won't be too difficult to buy actual Japanese manga. I have a little material right now, but none of it is translated material, so I'd have to stick with hard- translating it as best I can.

I consider myself a long ways away from bilingual- but I know enough to get my message across. (At which point my friends go 'ahhh' and correct my grammar- for which I am grateful. Japanese is a hard language- I wish you luck.)

I know several people who are on the forum have experience living in Japan but none of the people I looked out seem to have their comics available in Japanese, which is too bad.
One of the comics I'm subscribed to, Faerie Gari, the creator mentions in its description it was originally in Japanese- but there is only English available, sadly.

The only webcomic I can think of is Yuumei's series Knite which has gotten a number of translations, including Japanese (on the first chapter only, sadly.) however Knite on tapastic itself does not have any translations available- but in case you're interested, here it is all the same. (The deviantart versions are flash comics and cannot be read on mobile to my knowledge.)

If you look on the deviatart account for the Japanese chapter you can find numerous other translations available as well, for anyone else.

I find it easier to write the script in Spanish, but it's harder to translate into English, because I may have used idioms or figures of speech which I don't know how to translate well.
If I write it in English first, I'll limit myself to the English I know, so it won't sound awkward, and then I can have fun with the Spanish translation.

I thought about that once when someone mentioned how translation in Amilova works, where anyone can translate any page. I'd prefer a less open version, featuring a single translator for each comic, chosen by the author.

Hello. I'm new here. My comic strip Johnny Bullet is offered in both English and French here and elsewhere.
I find accessing the French version a bit buggy. Hopefully someone can help me with that.

Thanks or asking. I'm a French Canadian so there is always some influence seeping into my work but nothing direct. I write both versions at the same time and don't use word for word translations. But I like to say that each version is as authoritative as the other. Is the same process for you?

French-speaking Canada has really got me out of trouble when it came to translating my comic

My main hero speaks in Spanish. No direct translation within the page. I think it effects pacing. On my printed comics I save a page for his translations as a reference. I do a lot of research on locations and I use my own experiences too. I'm currently working on a full Spanish version of my book. It can be challenging having fans with different language needs.

What do you mean by you save a page for references? I have all the art, sound effects and blank bubbles on different layers and two extra layers for the French and English. All I need to do is add the texts to each layers at the same time and voilà.

If I ever need to translate in more languages such as Spanish, German or Mandarin, the comic is ready to go.

This is nice! I have 2 webcomics in both portuguese and english.

Delphinium: Don't Drink The Tea / Não Beba o Chá and End.

All the characters in Delphinium are brazilian, but I just translate everything they say. Sometimes I leave Thank You messages with some portuguese in it.

End. has a bizarre range of nationalities, and I am not sure where they are or what language they speak (probably all of them), so again, it is all translated to potuguese or english.

I add the translated page usually the same day I post the page.

I originally wrote my comic's script in Spanish, and had some future characters speak English (the implication being that the main characters have trouble understanding them), and I didn't know how to translate that situation into English.

Then I realized that I could change their nationality. They were originally going to be American, so I rewrote them as Canadian. This way, in the English translation, the language that they'll speak will be French.
