Liz is a what now?
The most prejudiced person in the entire book is Darcy imo, and Austen's narrative supports this with every little detail that ridicules him, especially coming out from Elizabeth's mouth. Seeing that Pride and Prejudice was Austen's dig at society's norms and expectations for women to find a wealthy man and marry him (I mean, it's the first sentence of the novel! the bite!), I don't know where anyone could see Elizabeth as a "bitch"... Not to mention that we for some reason render women like that the moment they stand up for themselves, while men are seen as "assertive".
Granted, I haven't finished the novel yet, but she never came off as "bitchy" to me. But then, I don't call women that term anyway, since it's so riddled with misogynist history, and I don't want to give in to that anymore (I did... as many of us are prone to, I suppose). I simply enjoyed her wit. Need to finish that book one day. Well, and all the other digs at society that Austen wrote.
Anyway, I guess for me it will always be The Neverending Story.
It's been years, no... two decades actually since I last read it, but it always draws me back for some reason. The way Bastian and Atreju's friendship is depicted, how much honest emotion Ende allows these boys (has anyone attempted a queer reading yet? asking for a friend), and then Bastian coming home, his father full of love... God. Brings tears to my eyes when I just think about it. The bullied, insecure kid finds love in all aspects of his life, without a name to his person in the end.
Just... beautiful.
And Ende's writing style is just mesmerizing, as well. If you have a chance to read it in German, don't think twice about it. I doubt that his magic can be replicated in another language.
