I see no reason why not. There are some quite successful "strips" out there that are only one panel. Like minimumble for instance.

Of course a single pic can be a comic. Most people will judge content by their quality, not their size. If one panel is really funny alone, it's better than 4 panels that are only kinda funny.

As far as defining what a comic is and isnt my favorite deffinition comes from this class.
The general idea is that a comic is art that is related to or in reference to something else, be it another panel, some speech bubbles, the rest of the book, an article, a political climet. I've found that it's a very inclusive deffinition and it's made me more receptive to looking outside of "sequential art" for inspiration and guidance, right now i'm a big fan of magazine illustrations.

Well this is just my opinion so take it with a pinch of salt. I don't care. : P

Illustration is telling a story from a single image. It's coherent on it's own and can express without the use of words.

A comic adds dialogue or relies on preceding images to make more of what's going on in the story. For me, if the dialogue on your sample is removed, I'd consider that an illustration.

That's just me anyway... Don't get salty on me... I get stressed.

I think that you don't really need a hard line differentiating these things from each other. There are probably some examples that could feel like either illustrations or comics in different contexts.

A Softer World is just nice photographs with meaningful text over them. The photograph isn't an illustration of the text.... it's more like a visual poem. We consider A Softer World a (fantastic) comic strip, but it would be easy to make a definition of "comic strip" that accidentally excludes it.

There are silent comics. There are illustrations that make use of typography. There are comics that focus more on atmosphere than story. There are illustrations that strive to communicate an entire story. Where do you draw the line between them? I don't think it super matters.

Well, Charles Addams kinda did that. =P I guess they call his stuff 'cartoons' but I always thought of them as...at least a type of comic. Hm, maybe I'm wrong, I dunno. XP

If we're going with the newspaper definition, then yes. That's why we have cases like Family Circus or Farside.

At the same time, comics as a medium are technically defined by being a collection of images juxtaposed alongside each other to create the illusion of a sequence in motion. Even comic strips use this, as they are multiple images stacked next to each other.

So technically, a single image is more accurately an illustration, and not a comic strip. At the same time, no one here will judge you for releasing single image strips.

It does to me. As long there's some text or dialoque in it, or it's a scene that clearly wants you(the reader) to see a certain story in it.
