I think i do, it was a pun of "getting it right of the bat". But being literal of getting "it" right out of a literal bat.
I think you failed in the delivery because you failed to make part of the context make the reader think it would mean to get something inmediately (the actual definition). The pun could be seen way before the punchline was delivered.
About the final pannel about making the poop dinner.....guess the wording and delivery was a bit clunky.
Now, here are some tips on how to improve your jokes in general:
-Pannels define the timing of the scene. When pannels are too close to each other, it is easy to accidentally see the punchline before time (specially if it is a visual gag)

As you can see, this pannel composition allow to hide the punchline on the bottom, so the reader doesnt accidentally see the punchline before time.
