In the beginning of the story, Gilbert and his best friend Selkie are losing a fight against a strange robot from a massive army called the factory police... Gunk shows up in the nick of time and saves them from the robot, then, the three decide to become a team after going with Gunk to his home town Rathead. They set off to rescue Gunk's brother, Lonsdale and his two friends who were kidnapped by the horrible Burg, who planned to turn them into snowmen and absorb them.
They are the Nightmare Heroes, and they set out on a journey in search of pages of 'Big Book', a mysterious book that, when read, the page grants super powers to the reader.
Gunk reveals that he himself has read a page, which had been the treasure of Rathead since he could remember. This page had granted him the power to control and create poison, as well as change the size of his weapons, his fork and spoon, which are also imbued with horrible poison.
Gunk is a formidable opponent and a loyal pal. Gunk's ambition is to restore the torn out pages of Big Book and gather them up and prevent the evil from obtaining them.
