Difficult drawing your own characters

Seriously, I have a hard time drawing these twerps' hair especially in different angles and how they even work. It is just so confusing, lolz!

And yes I design them and no I won't change it since I feel like their hair is perfect for them, even if it looks wack as hell in different angles.

But hey, at least they aren't bad as Yugio's starfish hair.

Have you guys ever have trouble drawing your own characters that you designed?

Yes I really can relate!
Though not about hair because I prefer designing character with "natural-ish" hairstyle and I have sketched them multiple times to memorize their facial features, it's rather when the character dress like this:

I redo the last shit three times.

I like how their hair looks. The same thing happens to me, i do the hair or add something and later when i want to draw another angle it suddenly gets hard and im like why!? if it was easy before . Now i understand why some make their character in different views,

Its why i keep my character designs simple, i have to draw them over and over again. The more complicated a character design is the easier it is to lose continuity and more time is spent on the character at hand.

I think an example i remember was in the commentary for a family guy movie where the artists were talking about how the baby character is a complicated character to animate due to poor character design (they couldnt animate a natural head turn with his head shape or something.)

My only advice is just draw your character in many different perspectives to experiment with how they would work. It can actually be fun to just goof around with too.

I FEEL IT

Like sometimes I think keeping a simple design is harder because each point of hair has to be sized and angled JUST RIGHT to not look like crap to me. This was my struggle when drawing this guy.

YES.

I love Kiyomi and I wouldn't change anything in her design but her hair is most of times making me take a break from drawing pages. It's about how it's all over the place and messy, but she wouldn't look the same with straight or short hair. This mess simply fits her. xD

And I have a silly problem with Himuri.

Basically, I'm so used to drawing him with his scars, that I often have to stop myself while making new pages since he doesn't have them yet. xD

Also I always had problem with consistency of short hair, so his haircut went from this:

Oh my, I feel tired just thinking about trying to replicate an outfit that complicated! the first picture didn't quite show it either, the pattern just continued the whole way down! Yeah I think I'll just stick with solid colors especially if its panels for a comic.

I'm still very mediocre to drawing so there is literally no consistency in my characters at all... I'm not even gonna share pictures it's sorta embarrassing Pretty much can't get the faces or the body types down. But practice makes perfect, I'm sure one day when I'm on my final chapter I'll finally have it figured out XD

Don't really have much difficulty drawing my characters anymore, but I sure didn't design them with simplicity in mind. Nopal, the cactus girl, gives me the most problems because not only does she have a lot of unique details, but she also uses a lot of different colors. She used to have white spots in her hair, but that took WAAAY too much time to color in every panel.

In all seriousness, it can be really hard to keep characters on-model! It's one of my weaker areas.

I was complaining about this to myself today! I drew the bulk of Imaginarium pages a while ago, so today when I was drawing a new episode I totally forgot how the Warden's hair parts--yay, break out the white-out and try to salvage it!

(Of course it's way easier to draw from one side and really horrible to draw from the other. Well, something to think about when planning future character designs, right?)

Yes! I never get their hair right. NONE of my characters have the same hairdo in the panels but doesn't look too inconsistent. I had to make charter profiles for myself because I don't remember how they should look like. Farah's hair is particularly difficult because of the crazy curls.

I designed him that way for realism, he's a royalty from an influential kingdom who loves fashion and there's no way I would give him plain clothes.

But I do agree this design is very suck for comic and animation, and many others of my design too have same problem. I don't make comic, but I weigh in because I frequently make art featuring same characters and clothes.

You're good, don't worry! the simplest practice is just sketch them continuously from different angle with different expression, you will attain consistency after sketching 10+ drawing. Just keep drawing and making craft!

haha 10+ drawing XD I've been doing my comic for a yr now definitely passed the 10+ drawing.

I do admit tho, that my regulars are starting to get better, but having a character that is absent for weeks and then returns is always the worse.

Well, a year is a long time that you can improve your skill within that time frame your style also can evolve between that time and it can make the character looks different before and after.

My hardest character to draw is Rapunzel, who i decided after being shut up in that dusty tower for so long no refuses to wear clothes, and she makes her hair form clothes as she needs them. this is fun it give me the freedom to change her alot, but it's not easy to draw.

The most difficult character to draw is by far Dr. Jekyll because his sweater has patterns and his hair takes time to ink.
