Discord (especially for me who hasn't known about it until two years ago): is a big chat site really. What usually/used to be something easy for gamers to chat in without the worry of disconnects or bad internet (to an extent) kinda became a place for everyone to log in, make friends and chat daily.
You can create groups based on your favorite games, favorite shows, fan groups for your work, or just a place where everyone can congregate and discuss plans for their future works, games, comics, personal projects, etc. Plus, the interface is easy to use, even on mobile.
I personally don't really have a discord group of my own, but I've joined quite a few that were made my friends, or based on my hobbies, or sharing my artwork and writing. It's quite easy to use and get a hold of once you get things going.
As for setting one up, you can go about it in various ways. Creating rooms to chat, channels for people to discuss things, share work, or just generally be silly. You can setup rules and regulations/moderators, and bot moderators (though I'm still learning that part), as well as sync your discord account with your patreon.
There's different options and settings to tailor and fit your discord server to whatever you choose, and give it your own personal touch.
For the two years I've been on it, I think I'm starting to get the hang of things. Oh, and stuff like muting folks, keeping your direct messages quiet, and even other settings personal to you will all be found in the options menu:
I hope this helps!
