Do you ever feel your too... nitpicky?

Basically... you have some nitpick or self-imposed rule that you feel everyone ought to follow (you should do this with your art or your writing should never do that) but sometimes you wonder if you aren't gating yourself out of some great content just to maintain your obsessive principles?

An example from myself: Lately I've been kind of avoiding comics that are strictly of some conventional style (traditional manga style or traditional western super hero style for example) because I've felt like 9 times out of 10 they're as conventional story-wise as they are style-wise. And on some level I feel that might still be correct but I might be missing some really good stories just because the bulk of them are kind of generic (something that's probably true irregardless of the art style).

To summarize: You have some bias, founded or not, that may be preventing you from reading some good stories.

i generally only read comics, i have a hard time getting into novels, but that may not be a nitpick, that might just be because i'm stupid

I understand this...especially when I try to watch anime. There's always 'something wrong' with every show (especially if you dislike fanservice); if you're too nitpicky you basically don't get to watch anything. And I basically don't get to watch anything...

It's kinda rotten to have this feeling that other people are having so much fun with all these stories they love, and all you have is a growing list of stories you MIGHT like if they didn't have one or two things that ticked you off...but it can't really be helped. I mean, what can you do?

I don't enjoy myself when I have to 'put up with things' in a story...so if that means I have to suffer a little more while trying to find entertainment options, I guess that's just the way it has to be.

I can relate to that. I've often joked that at this point in my life I read a whole lot... I just don't read any books or novels. Strictly articles, webcomics and stuff online.
I feel like I should feel guilty about it, does that sound like it's not an oxymoron? It's like this is something I ought to feel bad about but I don't?

Fanservice seems to always be a bit divisive. Probably doesn't help that everybody has a different definition of what's acceptable and what's nasty or demeaning. I've always tried to take the middle ground with my own comics because one part of me likes the idea of fanservice but another is kind of turned off by the stuff that goes waaaaayyy overkill with it.
It's probably a good thing that we all have such differing levels of what we're okay with but that don't make it any less awkward.

If this count, I sometimes have a hype aversion. The more hyped a thing is (unless I have followed it before it's got known and/or genuinely like it), the more I don't want to check it. Especially in mainstream media, I often connect hype with a mere marketing tactics and not the quality, and at times I don't fit with mainstream taste. Sometimes it makes me think twice to check popular or mainstream stuffs because of sometimes I associate popularity with being overhyped and disappointment. I know I might be missing something that I would really like just because of this, but sometimes I can't help it.

Sometimes I nitpick on character design, especially if it's unrealistic for the setting or just plain silly. It doesn't make me dislike the series altogether, but just have a single nerve in me screaming how it could be better everytime I see the characters. Also if I only can distinguish the characters by hair and clothing (as they all have same faces, build, and skin), or they are all being similar and it doesn't serve a purpose in the story (e.g. not a clone or related) then my mind won't shut up.

Just like you, I also nitpick on art-style. I'm more wary of art style that is commonly use in shōjo manga or any moe cutesy art style, I associate that art style with romance stories and I don't like romance.

Huh... thinking about each of the things you've said the first thing that pops into my head is My Hero Academia, have you read or watched that one?
It's well liked and hyped within a lot of communities, each character has a different design and some of then are jarringly different. The only exception would be that the art style isn't precisely conventional (kinda goes with the whole "every character is different" thing).

I never read novels that are written in first person. I'm very sure that I'm missing out on some very good stories because of that but it just makes me wince if I see it so I immediately close the novel again. Well, there are lots of other great novels out there that are written in another perspective and I wouldn't be able to read all of them anyway so I guess it's alright.

Huh.... now that you mention it I have trouble with first-person writing too. I wonder if there isn't something to that? Like maybe only certain types of people will prefer that sort of thing. Some sort of psychological thing where some of us think a certain way and because this type of writing is so extremely different from the way we think it kind of throws us off...

There was a time when I was a very tolerant guy who could put up with most anything, even if I didn't like it. Like Bleach, for example. I knew I wasn't going to like it right from the get-go, but because it was mainstream, and Shonen, I ended up downing a hundred and seventy nine episodes before finally putting it to rest. Now, I follow a very strict criteria, and if what I'm investing my time in doesn't reward me back, it's simply on to the next.

I became nitpicky with censorship.

I'm fed up of it, I feel bullied as a creator and infantilized as a consumer.

I'm okay with warn people that a certain work has mature content. But it puts me down access and find everything has been censored, cropped, erased.

And that's not only with content here, on the Internet, they're cropping more and more scenes of the animations they display on the TV on kids channels.

The last one I saw...

• They cropped a scene of Stand by Me Doraemon, when Nobita beats up (I don't say pull because he barely touches it) Shizuka's skirt to make her angry (he wanted to make her hate him, as he thought she would be happier without him in her life). So they're just there in front of one another, trying to talk, and the next you see is he apologizes [crop] and she slaps him in the face angrily

99% of time as a reader I'm avoiding comics with kissing/hugging sweet Shōjo-style characters at the thumbnail, and comics in Shōjo style in general.
Quite rarely I still give one of them a chance: if I gain a free episode in app with an appealing note or if I see a good review; and if in the same time title and description also give me a hope on something unusual. But after it, almost surely I feel disappointed and angry, because the comics still turns out to be typical romance shit.

So I don't tihnk that I lose much by NOT reading these comics.

Ohhhh I too am not a fan of Shoujo work. To the point that it took friends years to turn me around to at least give OHSHC a chance. I'm sorry I didn't read it sooner since it mocks everything I dislike about the genre that usually comes with that art style.

Kissing couple on a preview/cover. I am totally okay with everything, they can lay down on bed totally naked or anything, but not kissing please Especially if it's not purely romantic/erotic story and the romance is just a part of it. It just kills all the intimacy and the "first kiss within the story" idea? And just...no, thanks.

I nitpick art really hard, even officially published webcomics. I tend to lower my judgement if the art style is nice, but sometimes I still see wonky hands or forgotten details and I'M JUST TRIGGE R E D

Rarely have I found ones with writing styles that don't turn me off.
