yeah, it's heavy. there was a super hero I remember my dad telling me about from a comic who was an alien that came to earth and took the form of the first person he saw. that was a slave woman, so though he's ageless and been living for centuries, it's been living with the hardships of being a black person

I have flashbacks intercut with the story, usually focusing on one character a chapter,
but the villain of the current arc has such a long backstory that his chapter will take place entirely in the past, from his childhood to his wartorn adolescence and finally the decisions that led to him fighting Raikiri.

Wanna avoid future flashes, due to how seeing the future works in the story leads to possibilities than distinct answers.
But I've said too much...

I'm thinking about writing another one of these when Alicia was a toddler, but my biggest concern with writing bonus chapters set back in time is that I might find a good reason to put the memories directly in the story itself, rather than as side content, and then it would feel a bit redundant. Somethings though, like stories about side characters' childhoods/pasts and such probably won't end up in the story directly, so I can foresee myself writing quite a lot of those

For my light novel, I am currently using a writing technique called in media res where the story begins when action is already happening and the beginning is told in flashbacks and alternating with the present storyline. It's because time is an important part of the story. It can be confusing at first but opening with the rising action of the story is very powerful on readers and also make some mysteries for them to think about since my story is simple and boring if told chronologically (from past to present).

Mostly only in the past for flashback stuff. I've only once wrote a chapter set a couple chapters in the future for the sake of making the start of an arc more dramatic

Every chapter (or close to it) includes a snippet from the protagonist's backstory to better show who he is as a person. I got this idea from Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy, where every book has the main story and something written by another character in-universe, placed right at the start.
