I like the few stories that exist outside of the 'Big Two'(Marvel/DC), otherwise I can see why people don't gravitate to them. I'd personally like the genre more if new stories were created and allowed to get popular outside the net, rather than just remaking the same stories from 60+ years ago. Not saying they're not great, but, way past time to move on...

Hey everyone, glad to see there are some superhero fans here on Tapastic. J.Bone and Chris Stone do a strip called Secretman right here on this very site. I think it's pretty great and fun but as one of the creators I'm kind of biased. Hi everybody, I'm Chris, nice to meet you.

We are on our second storyline and are trying to come up with some fresh new ideas for the genre while still playing with a lot of the things that make superhero comics fun. Check it out and enjoy

Superheroes are a cool genre. I've got some superhero concepts of my own I'd like to turn into comics one day.
I haven't read too many Superhero comics, since I'm more into reading manga. The movies and cartoons are what got me interested in the genre.

I think the difficulty of doing superheroes is that you have to bring something new to the table. Superheroes have been around for so long that you have to offer something that DC or Marvel haven't already done. Making a superhero story in a Manga style is one such thing.

Super Hero concepts (of the spandex/costumed kind) are rare in manga/anime but they're there. 8D Others have mentioned OnePunch-man and Tiger&Bunny. There's also Ratman (which is not as popular as the first two, btw OnePunch-man is awesome!). There are more which I haven't read/watched, like Zetman and My Hero Academia but I think they fall under the superhero genre.

I didn't read Marvel/DC comics when I was a kid, but what I've seen on tv (like the animated series and movies) intrigued me. But thanks to the many superhero movies that are popping up in cinemas since the early 2000s (my word, I feel old) now I'm more open to the genre than I was growing up.

Heheh, also... I saw the word Super Hero and I can't help but do a bit of self-promo XD;;;; My comic The Masked Henchman is set in a superhero setting but it's more slice-of-life than action and more in the views of a bystander than an actual hero. (It's also heavily influenced by OnePunch-man. XD;;;;;)

Long answer. I don't really remember who said it (it may have been Will Eisner) but i think "Every superhero story has been told" there's a lot of interesting stuff in our world and stories to share/write, to be re-doing the same old superhero stuff since the 50's i think the only somehow original story from the last 20 years from that genre has been one punch man, and i really can't think of something else that has not been formulish (Superman, Batman, Spider-man remixes)

I like a good superhero story, myself! But I like them just as much when they're twisted into something a little newer! My comic on Tapastic (Halftone) is about a world that includes superheroes, but focuses more on the police who live in that world. Everyone's seen Superpants Vs. Professor Perilous or what have you, but not a lot of people have read comics like Gotham Central (one of my favourites) about the police who have to handle the D-listers, or stumble upon the A-listers at a bad time, or what have you.

I'd like to think there's still a lot that can be done with the superhero genre. It just has to break out of old molds, you know?

@Exeivier: If you think about it, really all stories have been told already. It's just more obvious within the superhero genre because of DC and Marvel's obsessive commitment to not taking creative risks. Superman and Batman remixes are exactly what they're looking for in "NEW" Concepts because they know it will sell.
Superheroes themselves are not actually from the early 20th century but actually date back to pre-history. It's hard to read ancient mythology with its Titans, and Demigods, Gods and Monsters and not a few good ole' human heroes running around with hi-tech warrior gear and not see the true root of the super-hero concept. In reality superhero stories date back to the Epic of Gilgamesh and beyond that into unwritten fables and legends. The superhero adventure may be the most ancient of storytelling concepts!
@ToonDoctor is right that super hero stuff doesn't seem to be too popular here on Tapastic, from the staff down to the readers, but there are a few of us on here trying to change this by showing that, as with any genre, there are still cool stories to be told.

I believe Ultraman brought in the spandex for the Japanese viewers. And then we have the Power Rangers (the original, I forgot the Japanese name for them)

Oh, you mean tokusastu? 8D Oh yeah, I forgot about them! With the spandex and helmets. (and I think the Power Rangers' original name is the Super Sentai?) There's also Tatsunoko Productions which brought superheroes with spandex, helmets AND capes! I can't believe I forgot about all of them. owo;;

I read super hero comics sometimes. I grew up on them. I have nothing against them, but I've learned over the years not to try to impose a genre on people. The folks here are very different than your comic book store typical comic buyer. That's one reason why I decided to pull off Johnny Bullet (who is not super hero material). It's the wrong audience.

I feel bad for you in a way. But there are some very successful Web comics about super heroes. They just aren't found on Tapastic and Smart Jeeves. Wrong audience.

I'm in disagreement with this. Both of my titles are niche titles, but I was expecting that. Tapastic contains a lot of readers, and I don't have to engage all of them, only the ones that want to read our material. In the end, every fan counts, so the 22 subscribers that I have picked up for both titles are more than enough to make it worthwhile to keep posting here. Besides, both are just getting started, and I would want to get at least an issue posted before deciding something wasn't going to work out.

I tend to agree with @eagle1. Tapastic may not be a venue custom made for american style superhero or Sci-fi comics but I enjoy the challenge. A really well-done comic should transcend genre anyway. I'll certainly be on the lookout for venues to put my stuff that may be have a larger built-in audience, but I'm sure I'll always keep it on Tapatstic as well. I do this not only because the design and interface are so outstanding here (not to mention the community), but because in the end I believe what I'm trying to do will appeal to fans who enjoy strong characters, a cool story, realistic sci-fi world-building, and strong art. I don't see any reason almost any comic fan couldn't bring themselves to enjoy strong work in any genre or style. I accept the challenge that the onus is on me as a creator to make the comic worth reading to more than just the average comic shop superhero fan. That is, after all, exactly the kind of " superhero" book I'm trying to do.
