Do you guys like super hero concept genre?

Well, although I need to practice anatomy in my own comics, I can clearly see that all mangas do look the same. It's the same stories over and over again, with huge eyes and disproportionate faces, a lot of sexism and at least a couple of characters who spend their time crying over anything and everything. And I grew up with anime and manga (along with superhero stuff), so, yes, I know what I'm talking about.

EDIT: I asked someone who's not into manga anymore but is desperately looking for anything different in the manga/anime world to point me to at least one anime or something he's enjoyed recently. He said, try Attack on Titan on Netflix. Two episodes in, I was still trying hard. Third episode, I was out. It's same old, same old.

I'm actually a big fan of the superhero genre, even though I never really read comic books.
In fact, I write a superhero story and post it up in chapters occasionally.
It's called Hero's Dilemma, and it leans more towards the fun and light-hearted side of the genre. Most of the time.

I have two issues with superhero stories.

one: I love superhero stories, but marvel and DC (mostly marvel) are really starting to run me dry, especially since we have about ten more movies to go to in order to understand EVERYTHING thats happening :v

two: theirs some stigmata attached to comic that they can ONLY be for superhero stories, when really they can be stories of anything. Not sure if thats the same everywhere else, but i cant tell you how many people at my college where always sniffing around my comics wondering why i didn't have superheroes in my stash, or when I told them my idea to draw a new comic they would have this face and assume Im making a comic with a man in tights

those two things aside. I love that stuff! origin stories are hard to get through though :v just start them off in their tight spandex and im fine.

...or at least that's what I think of first.

I mostly don't care about superheroes. I've read barely any DC/Marvel comics, save for like, 2-3 DC ones I checked out, and The Killing Joke is pretty much the only one I enjoyed. (...so VERY happy to hear there's an animated version being made with Mark Hamill supposedly, OH yeah.) And Batman is the only superhero I really liked via Batman the Animated Series and the Tim Burton movies, and he isn't really a regular superhero in my view since he has no powers, and if the villains hadn't had been so darn interesting, I probably wouldn't have liked him much either. Though in recent years I haven't even been fond of most new adaptations of Batman. I'm also more likely to care about the standalone Batman stories than crossovers with other superheroes, because I don't know much about the other superheroes and couldn't really get into them, so it makes it kind of boring to me.

No offense to anyone! I know some people grew up watching/reading about superheroes and I understand how you could get into it, and I have liked PLENTY of characters with super powers from anime and what-have-you, some that even wear costumes/uniforms or have transformations, ect. ect. . so I totally get it. Nowadays, I'm just more likely to get into that sort of thing if it has something really different going for it.

If I were to say anything about superheroes, it's that I don't need the costumes and gimmicks. Put that stuff aside already and just give me a great story and characters....that just happens to have super powers involved. The more realistic these stories try to be, the more silly the spandex seems, IMO.

but i think id be more interested in something superhero that hasnt been done before. like, something not set in america, or at least not new york, with a quieter ambiance than most superhero comics, which are very bright and loud. i like how things like chronicle (the movie) and we can never go home (the comic) toy with the idea of superpowers without the hero bit, and how that can go.

but im ALWAYS a slut for teenagers on the run learning about their new powers and saving lives on the way coughcoughrunawayscoughcough

The people in your college sound really snooty. I'm blessed to be in a college community that respects people like superhero comics as much people who prefer other genres. Those people you described are the kind of fans that annoy me.

Also, I'm ok with origin stories as long as they don't drag on. Character development is great and all, but sometimes you're just like "GET TO THE FIGHTING ALREADY!".

Indeed often tims the origin story can drag on and as much as i LOVE characture development you don't need to shove it all at the begining you can flesh it all out as you go on far past the origin.

As for my college it wasn't a college for artists i can tell you that much. The semester right after I left they JUST got a comic development class which both makes me sad and happy XD cause I wanted a class like that, but who knows, I also prob influenced one of the teachers. :v

For me, I'm not really into superhero comics because I find the entry barrier to be pretty high, especially if the series has been around forever. Like where do I start? What's with all the alternate universes and reboots? I also don't like buying things issue by issue and would rather wait until a full trade volume comes out.

However I have enjoyed a few superhero shows. I particularly loved Static Shock and Young Justice. (I really want a complete dvd collection of both of them) So I'm not opposed to superheroes entirely, just how their comics are all set up.
As for anime/manga, I freaking love Tiger & Bunny. The intrigue and action are great, and I love all the characters. I have the series on blu-ray and am currently collecting the manga volumes as they come out.

This is a huge reason why I'll never, ever bother to check out a superhero comic in all likelihood. Even if it's a brand new franchise, as an outsider to the genre, I won't even be able to tell it's a new franchise that's easier to get started with.

Yep, I lived on Spider-man, X-men, Ghost-Rider, Spawn etc when I was a kid. Then they got greedy, especially Marvel, and started pumping out a dozen titles and timelines and alternate bla-blas fir each character... it's really what led me to give up on comics for a long time.

So yeah, I'll always have a special place in my heart for some superheroes, but I don't really read much superhero stories these days, not unless they're more grounded and 'realistic'.

Having said that, I really enjoy most of the superhero movies and I loved the Daredevil show.

I grew up on all the Chris Claremont x-men stuff in the late 80's and 90's. After a while it just seemed like the same old stories over and over. As I matured I realized that the big companies like Marvel and DC were focused solely on profit and so they were deeply risk-averse when it came to the stories they were willing to tell. It wasn't a lack of imagination on the writers' parts that kept the storytelling cliche' and mediocre-- cliche' and mediocre are exactly what the big companies want. Just like major record labels they aren't in the business to take chances, they sell only what they know has already succeeded--they just work hard to cleverly repackage it. The editors at the big companies will straight up tell you this if you can get them to speak honestly. That kind of thing soured me on superhero comics for a long time. It was only in the last few years that I decided to try and make the kind of sci-fi superhero comic I always wanted to read myself. I'm just getting started but if anyone else out there who gave up wants to give the superpowers thing another try check out Heroes for Ghosts and let me know how I'm doing!

There's a fan-edit running around for the Marvel Cinematic Universe that I love. It's 22 hours, uses every minute of footage from all of the MCU movies, plus the deleted scenes, plus the ending credit scenes, plus the Marvel One-Shots, and edits them all together. Since several of the movies take place at the same time, this is rather impressive. Oh, and all the flashback scenes are put in the correct chronological place. And all credits have been removed unless there is story going on while the credits are rolling.

Makes for a very different viewing experience, and shows that all of the MCU movies have been telling a larger story all along. From a writer's viewpoint, it is highly impressive.

NO-Earth is my creation, which I have opened up into a shared universe, and an artist/writer CO-OP. All of the titles being produced are set in the same world, and are interconnected, with a few caveats.

Very little spandex. For most heroes, it makes no sense, so very few are going to wear it. A number of them don't even have standard costumes, because, like, why? Body armour, face concealing masks instead of ones that leave the highly identifiable jawline exposed, and so on. It's a different world.

Most of the titles don't deal with the superhero world directly. The Shadow War's main character
is an industrial spy/thief who happens to have the superpower of line of sight teleport. It's what got him into his occupation, and what makes him so good at it. The Law of the Jungle's main character is a young woman who is raised by werewolf hunters, with her not knowing that she's a Wolf herself.

Both are totally self-contained, require no knowledge of the world beyond what is in the comic itself, and can be read without reading any other title in the line. Any crossovers will have all relevant scenes in both books, so that you don't have to go read something else to make sure you don't miss the story you were following.

There is a third title coming the 26th of this month named Pride that is a slice of life/relationship book that is also a police proceedural that will wind up dealing with other aspects of the NO-Earth world. I will be posting it here on Tapastic too.

I never got into mainstream superhero comics, and before I got seriously into webcomics, the only comics I read were Japanese or Korean. I find the mainstream superhero franchises to be intimidating and confusing because there are just so many stories by so many different teams, with all sorts of reboots and alternative universes.

That said, I enjoy stories about superheroes, they just have to be in a more manageable format. Marvel's films are very accessible, and I'm happy to read superhero webcomics, indie comics or novels if the story and characters appeal to me.

@infectedbloodcomics, my main problem with the way that Marvel and DC are doing their new 'diversity' is that it comes across as forced and artificial. It feels like tokenism, and feels like they are trying to fill quotas... Look! Let's make Wolverine a female and make Captain America black, and make Iceman gay.

I would much rather read comics where the characters are designed that way from the start, rather than having a 'group' stuck on them as if their skin colour or sexual orientation were the most important thing about them, and then keep writing the character the same old way.

When I write a character, the character is the most important thing. If there is going to be something interesting or special about the character, then it's going to be something that is integral to the character, not something stuck on as a label to make the comic look more progressive. I write female characters, gay characters, bisexual, and people of all races. I don't write Transgender characters because I have only known one as a friend, and wasn't close enough to feel that I can write that with any literary honesty. However, one of the writers for the CO-OP has a main character that is gender fluid, so that will be something that is coming in the next month or so, at least in script form.

But yeah, the big two have dropped the ball on superhero comics in a lot of ways. You need to go to the smaller companies to see good takes on the genre.

I find the super hero archetypes kind of repetitive. Even trope-subversion and lampooning are really old. When they are done well they can still be entertaining (I like a lot of the MCU movies), but I prefer fresh and different stuff.

I do like the superhero genre, both for western and eastern styles. Marvel/DC stuff like Batman, Avengers etc... But I don't dabble into it that much, as I've only checked out the movies. I'm not exactly a big fan of how there are so many "alternate universes" for some of these comics though... Maybe I just like one ultimate canon story...

On the other hand, I enjoy some series that parody the superhero genre. The first one that comes to mind is an anime Tiger & Bunny which is totally awesome.

they were cool to me back in the day but, im kinda burned out on them now, i mean theres just no variety. i can respect them for what they are because im a guy who loves my stereotypes, but i need a break from it, i guess thats why i kinda started reading manga, not that its any less of a stereotype, but at least your getting more funny, crazy and outlandish backstories, powers, characters, and motives
