How’s it going gang? Let’s have a discussion.
Have you hate-read any comics? are you hate-reading comics right now?
Basically, reading comics with the express purpose of getting pissy at things like how badly they’re written, etc

I do hate read because i have no self respect, namely two comics (one really popular one everyone seems to love and one not so popular one which i find the actions of the creator to be absolutely annoying as hell -dw, it’s no one from the tapas community)
i think that for me it taps into that need to cringe at people I feel are part of my ‘in-group ’ (comics making) but represent something i consider behavior i disagree with lol

Haha usually when I hate a work I actively avoid it at all costs!

But there is one thing I'm reading where I think the characters are a hot mess, and I don't particularly care for them. Like they've made my eyes roll so much after the first couple chapters when they were tolerable. However I do quite enjoy the setting and world-building of the story. So I'm still reading it for that.

Well, if you want something so bad it fils you with rage you should def read my works lol :joy:

But for real now. I do sometimes read news on crapy people or watch videos about infuriating subreddits or topics for entertainment, but never really found a comic out there that fills me with the same kind of anger, only got annoyed or bored at best.

Nope, life is too short! I'm sure some people hate-read mine, though :innocent:

No, I don't. To be honest I hate that kind of thing, I had someone who hate-read my very first attempt at making comics online. And he didn't even give me advice, it ""wasn't his problem".

So yeah, I'm not hating on anyone but I really dislike this kind of behaviour. Especially if the person doesn't give any constructive feedback and just pisses on it.

Ah, I get that. There are quite a few comics out there that I love the concept of, but hate the delivery itself. However, I'm not as patient as you are and will usually just ditch the comic if I can't tolerate the characters.

No, but I do hate read books because I love how much I hate them!

Rarely but it does happen. Usually it's when a friend links something to me like "Did you see this hot mess?" and then we have a heated discussion about it. It's really more about bonding, the same way we might bond about how ugly and hideous the new market building is or something.

Sometimes I do read comics I don't enjoy just to pinpoint what about it I don't like or what I don't think works. The same way I sometimes watch movies I don't like. It helps me figure out what not to do. I don't judge online comics nearly as harshly as I do published ones, because online comics are usually made as a hobby and the creators often work alone without an editor. It's a lot of work, so expecting perfection would just be rude.

It's strange, I have this with books, but never with comics  Rather, I start reading a book not knowing how bad it is, and when it turns to shit, I don't stop. I guess I am just enjoying at least soooome part of it if I don't drop it, even if I hate it guts, or maybe I am waiting for something redeeming. Maybe comics are a bit harder to swallow like that

This one can understand enjoying things in the so-bad-it-is-good genre, but actually consuming things that give nothing but bad feelings? What???

lol this is the one thread i thought surely no one would self-promote on

That was my attempt at a joke... when I promote my novels I leave links and stuff like that... Sorry if it came out the wrong way.

hmm i think theres a big distinction to be made between hating on a comic and hate-reading a comic. i dont go around leaving comments on how much these comics suck, to me.
hate reading is a way for me to recognize what i dont like about my own writing, what i find unacceptable to do as a public figure with a public comic (behavior, not plot or art!), and where i find my own downfalls are, in a kind of "safe space" of seeing it in someone else's work before needing to turn it on myself. i dont think thats the kind of thought process i should be commenting on someone else's work, even if it were extremely well thought out.
in my personal opinion seeing work we dislike is just as valid a learning process as seeing work we do like as long as we're open to self criticizing and analyzing our own approach to it

i agree! both the comics i hate-read i do with a friend. its just Nice analyzing a piece of media and figuring out why we dont like it, in a way i think its just as and sometimes more ground for self-discovery!

for me, if im reading an indie comic what i wouldnt like about it would have more to do with the creator and public etiquette, their comic often being a kind of microcosm of their own actions (otherwise, its just some badly written content, why would i care?) if its non-indie comics (professionally published, or picked up by tapas or webtoons and paid for, for example) i do find the content "worthy" of analysis since it's being presented as a professional piece of media, theres writers and artists and editors, and the final piece says something. if that something is "bad", it's fair game to call them out (imo)

Hate is a strong-word but sometimes i do continue reading comics even if I dislike the premise or just go "wtf" haha. Typically some bl (I just have a love-hate relationship with it in general and for the fun of it, I read bl with similar vibes in the old smackjeeve days). I don't necessarily hate it (otherwise, I won't continue reading it within a mile radius or so)

I hate-read all the time. It's one of my favourite things to do. Just get friends on a discord call and read shitty BL mango aloud to each other (sfx included).

No. I don't have enough free time to bother hate reading, and even if I did probably still a no.

I don't hate read anything because I don't skim-read. For me a bad book/comic would be really tedious to get through, and I'd just end up wasting my energy over nothing. I've read funny excerpts from bad books though. Mostly descriptions of women/ sex scenes.

Now hate-watching bad movies is something I do. You can put them on the background and do other stuff at same time.
