I usually have the characters first and then the story so technically all my characters were once storyless

Absolutely haha, I both write and draw and a lot of the characters I have are purely for drawing and often don't really have a story or even personality.

Just have a couple of them. I cant help to give them a backstory once I have created them.

The only exceptions are a fish oc I couldnt find aplace where to make him fit in in one of my old stories and the ocs I do for my work irl

Yeah, OCs. i have a lot in my younger years, i made less and less now, still have some new ones outside my comic series though. Some are/were rejected or became obsolete, some were created for assignments, some were supposedly game characters but i never really made the games.

Usually I'll have some idea of their background and the world they live in, but other than that I've yet to think of compelling plots to involve them in. I know the plots don't have to be 'big' and can just be slice-of-lifey, but I currently don't have time to work on each one. I have to finish the current ones on my plate first.

I have a giant gorilla called Gorn who I removed from my comic years ago because I thought drawing gorillas was going to be a pain.

I might let him have a little cameo in the background somewhere because I feel bad.

Yes!!! Lately I think about the story first, but most of my work is about expressing feelings and emotions. So I draw them regularly but they are often showing the same emotion. Sometimes they are given a story later.

This is "Passion" in the original sense of the word, which is suffering.

I did. Her name was Amber Firefly. That was all I knew at first except that I wanted to put her into a story. In the end, she got her own story. Not one of my best, I think. But at least it's short.

I got a couple of OCs who I haven't decided their stories yet, just general personality vibes
I'm not too worried since they're from a story I haven't started yet, and also usually a character's wants/needs/challenges come to me sooner or later (or when in trouble, I listen to specific music for inspiration )

Like sometimes you just engage with the character and want to give it a story right?

Like one-off characters you never write a lot for? Yes! I make tons of them for conceptual art. I think most artists do this. It's relaxing and fun.

This is one of the newest ones I made! I'm calling her Skybright and she's a visual depiction of how it feels to be in love.

Angel Halo who is a depiction of the vibes I get when listening to vaporwave. (I actually made her for my vaporwave archive cover lol!)

And Spacemist who is a visual depiction of a dream I had in high school. Her glowing rings sent me into a dimension of grey mist that was in space. The dream never clarified but I think I was inside a nebulae!

And yes, I do give them cheesy names because I like it and my brain is partially stuck in my 00s art mode.
