Do you know that "Manga" is a Japanese translation of "Comic"?

Well... my comic Two Faced is /manga style/, but I'm from England so I call it comic. (It doesn't fit in the traditional monochrome manga either, it's fully painted) I don't even know where it would fit, Indie comic? idk

I guess I would class manga as the monochrome drawings stuff. idk I call it whatever.

Personally, My comic is heavily influenced by japanese art and I even go as far as using as many pen techniques as I can to achieve the authentic look. I'm japanese in ethnicity but born and raise in California. I've known that Manga literally means comic so I use both depending on who I'm talking to. I've never understood why people try to categorize them differently like that though. That's like calling music from japan "Ongaku" and say it's different from music. That's just my opinion though.

I call it "manga," because the term usually makes a useful distinction between comics of the western style, and those of the eastern. Japanese comics as a whole are distinctive enough that, purely from a linguistic standpoint, the additional information provided by the word "manga" is worth using it, so to speak.

Of course, "manga" is just a translation of "comics". That hasn't stopped it from becoming a specific term in its own right. Language changes over time to fit the uses that people need from it, is all.

I mainly use word "comics" for every um... comics (even my parents do) xD
It's funny when people say: It's not a comic it's manga. Basically what they say is: it's not a comic it's comic, always cracks me up xD

The artist Hokusai (who made that painting of waves that everyone has seen at some point) created an art compilation that he named "The Manga." It was not a comic, simply an art book. Then Osamu Tezuka started making comics and calling them manga as well.

Manga is generally a comic either from Japan or in a recognizably Japanese style. Manwha from Korea has some notable differences in stylization. Traditional Western comics have their own style as well. I don't consider a comic as manga unless it is either from Japan or shares common visual characteristics with those that are. Dramacon is manga because it looks like manga. Plume is not manga even though the art style could arguably be influenced by it. Honestly I really like webcomics in general because they don't need to stick with labels and can explore tons of different art styles.
