Do you know that "Manga" is a Japanese translation of "Comic"?

So it's been a long battle about manga and comic are not the same. Of course they aren't. But when you say "manga" it's a japanese translation of "comic".

So the Question is, When you see a "manga" without looking on the anime style of illustration. Do you still called it as a comic or refer it to just "manga"? Do you called it comic because your comfortable with it or separate it as manga and comic because of the style?

I'm a native Korean speaker. Yet when I'm talking in English, I use the word "manhwa" to refer to comics made either by Koreans, and/or for a Korean audience. I apply a very similar logic to the word "manga." Am I talking in Japanese? Then it's just a word for any type of a comic. But is the conversation in English? Then I'm referring to a very noticeable manga influence (this sentence is so meta).

I don't call my comic manga because it doesn't read right to left, although I don't have a problem if people want to call it a manga. My art style does have an undeniable manga influence, after all.

When I speak with people in Japanese, I refer to these visual stories as 'manga'.
When I speak with people in English, I refer to them as 'comics'.
Since as mentioned by the original post, the two words mean the same thing in their respective languages.

It reminds me of how some people like giving their dog a name that means "dog" in another language (like "Inu" in Japanese for example). It sure sounds exotic and unique to people who don't know the language, but to those who are native to or speak the language it's the same as watching non-English-speaking people call their dog, "Dog". It kind of amuses me haha.

Though I notice many people tend to use the term 'manga' when referring to Japanese comics, as well as non-Japanese ones that have influence from the often recognizable artstyle seen in a lot of Japanese comics.
But like keiiii, I don't really care all that much if people call my comics 'manga', 'manhwa', or whatever else. People have their preferences, and they all mean the same thing anyway.

I'm fairly inconsistent in whether I call it "manga" or "Japanese comic" - but I only use those two phrases when referring to comics created by Japanese people, or comics published in Japan. The same goes for manwha (and manhua, which is a spelling I've seen used for Chinese comics, but am not 100% sure of?).

When it comes to Western comics with clear manga-influences, I use "manga-influenced comic", if I need to define the style of it. Otherwise, I just call them comics.

A manga is not anime style.anime refers to Japanese Animation.

I use 'comics' most of the time, regardless of the country of origin. I tend to use 'manga' if I'm specifically talking about comics of Japanese origin. I don't want to contribute to the divide between manga and other types of comics (i.e.: people who say they don't like manga, or people who say they only like manga) when at the end of the day, it's all comics. There are certain narrative styles, tropes and visual cues that are more common in comics from particular countries, but given the number of new comic creators (especially among webcomics) who are heavily influenced by manga despite being from outside Japan, it's not a clear divide in terms of how they look and read.

Is a tomato a fruit? Yes.

Would you put a tomato in a fruit salad? No.

Yes, an anime is just Japanese for animation, and yes, a manga is just Japanese for manga, but there's still a significant difference between the two. Just like how you wouldn't put a tomato in a fruit salad, you wouldn't call Spongebob Squarepants or the Simpsons an "anime", and you wouldn't call the original Superman or Batman comics a "manga".

A manga is a comic, but a comic is not necessarily a manga.
An anime is a cartoon animation, but a cartoon animation is not necessarily an anime.

To general population if you say 'manga' they already have a very clear mental image of what that is. The same can be said for Anime, thou it mean japanese animation people will still refer to an art style as 'anime' simply because they're base of ref is 'that picture looks like the japanese cartoons i watch'

The words themselves in the general population have been redefined far from their original straight translations into more cultural symbols that people use to express an artstyle/artform that has strong japanese/korean influence

Translation is the same, medium is the same, but there are noticeable differences between both. I don´t really care about it, but some people amuses me when they say things like "i want to draw manga, comics sucks"

What i find more interesting is that not anyone can be called mangaka outside Japan (or Asia maybe) by what i know.

I call a "comic" comics originally written in English
''manga'' if it's made by the Japanese, Manwha if its dawn by Koreans, but I don't really think about it. Even if I don't know the author I would go by the cultural tendency. But it's just to make people understand what I'm talking about, cause if I say " I read a comic"most people would think of things such as Marvel stuff.

I consider mine a comic cause I'm western even if it may have some Asian tendencies in the aesthetics.

Comics are manga and manga are comics.
They only different in the visual cues, art style and tropes they use, that's it.

I call everything a comic because we're in the western world, so I use the word in the relevant language. I find a lot of people will take you less seriously if you refer to your comic as a 'manga' as it seems like it stems from the stigma of the weaboo subculture. Plus some older people have no idea what a "manga" is.
