Well, unusual names are interesting to me because sometimes it helps me remember them. Common names are good though, they ground us and set the scene appropriately for different countries and such, but names don't usually stick for me personally sometimes when there are so many characters across billion of works that may share the same name. It also makes me think of other characters when they share a name too. For example, the name "Jake" may be for a guy character in X comic, but my mind may be thinking of Jake the Dog from Adventure time. And although this may not be the case for everyone, names DO have a lot of different histories, not just the usual meanings. We continue to make new associations of names. Personally, I love how creative creators can get with names, but that doesn't mean I hate common names. I just have a strong affinity for the weird and unusual.
As a kid and even as a creator now, I'd have my characters have names that perhaps would make sense for the type of character they are or something that connected to something else about them. I'd always pick names that would have cute or funny nicknames. For instance, my two characters are named "Redley" and "Greyson" and I named them that simply because one is a Fox (Redly, as in his red fur, he's a red fox but also because it sounded cute and he's kind of a sweet but fiery character so the "red" part also has a double meaning) and the other is a Wolf (Greyson, for grey wolf, but also grey as in a bit gloomy as he does struggle with happiness) Usually, I like fun names or names that have a connection or deeper meaning to other things
