No it does have a lot to do with Jamaica, because I am telling you about the kind of characters you will find in the story because Jamaicans are people that value fellowship in a unique way (I would know because I am Jamaican)

Personally i would not call "using stereotypes" a sound advice.

I won't push the morality reasons many folks already wrote about and focus on the practical aspect instead. We need to make a distinction between stereotypes and archetypes.

They might sound similar at first, but there is a subtle key difference. Stereotypes fall in the trappings of oversimplification which leads to something unoriginal. Archetypes are molds based on patterns but leave enough space to create something original and fresh out of it.

We have archetypes related to story roles like a love interest, mentor, etc. We also have archetypes based around roles in society. However a character creation doesn't end there.

You have to dig deeper if you want compelling characters. To give a Kings of the Hill example. Hank fits the archetype of a traditional patriotic texan, but he is way more than that. He has a fascination for propane gas and its many uses which is silly but also relatable because we all have something like that in our lives, he gets concerned when his son gets into something new he doesn't understand/like but that lead to entertaining journeys of understanding those topics and his son further. There's way more to Hank Hill that seems the eye, but he is not the walking stereotype of "texan" which is the silly example of cowboys with guns.

Any setting can be interesting if written well enough.

My advice is that if you wanna take that route, do a research for inspiration.

The myths, history, lore, aesthetics and many elements can inspire compelling stories, characters and a unique worldbuilding.

Yes as long as the story is written good, with well developed characters and excellent world building it shouldn’t matter where the story takes place.

Also a Jamaican fantasy novel sounds like it could be fun, think of the all the mythology you can take inspiration from.

I would venture to say that even though you are Jamaican, you shouldn't make generalizations about your entire diaspora. everyone is different, even if a good portion of the people you know do fall within that description.

My story is set in a fictional world influenced by African mythology, with gods, spirits, and monsters drawn from that tradition. The magic system is based on the Yoruba religion from Nigeria.

The overall vibe I’m going for is something similar to Naruto or Avatar with a character-driven story with a mix of action and worldbuilding.

I’ve posted it on a few different platforms (RR, Webnovel, and Scribblehub), but it hasn’t gained much traction so far. That could be due to my own storytelling, or maybe the title, cover, or blurb isn’t doing a great job of conveying what the story is really about.

I’m not sure if there’s much of an audience here for Black-inspired fantasy, but I’d love it if I was wrong about that.

Either way, I still plan to finish the first major plot arc. I just haven’t decided yet if I’ll continue beyond that.

I got high numbers on one chapter is because I ran a tiktok ad but they never continued after that chapter so it could have just been bots coming to the chapter.

My final word here...

I've always told people to write what they know. And the gangsta comic I posted at first that caused offense wasn't meant to target Africans.

It was a reflection of my experiences with FILIPINO gangs at that time. During my youth, I was very desperate for a sense of belonging, acceptance, brotherhood, etc... of being part of a family. And since I didn't know any better and my mind was weaker, I decided to seek them out.

Got mixed in with an 18 year old dude (I was 14) who was already a hardened gangsta. Let's call him "Mike". He did cocaine and his job was to recruit people.

This particular gang had the bottom level arm that was comprised of youth aged 12-20. Most of them not even making money, just enjoying the rush of feeling powerful hanging out with others like them. But they still acted as thugs to beat up, harass, intimidate the opposition. Vowing to be each other's "resbak" (from English "rest back") meaning "your enemy is the enemy of the gang".

And of course, above them are probably the bigger fish who do all the criminal activities and have front businesses, and protectors in the police and government.

Long story short, when I was nearly KILLED by the rival gang (lets call them "DEF") for being suspected of being a member of "ABC" (real gang name changed) due to association with "Mike". I was surrounded by 7 of them and I thought I was gonna die. They were yapping about how 2 of their members got ice picked and baseball batted in an ambush.

Good thing one of them checked me for tattoos that identity me as "ABC". I have none.

So I was left alone. But still traumatized. I was 14.

And after that, I went into hiding and figured the life of gangsta isn't cool.

And so years after that, I did a fictional comic influenced by the gangstas I interacted with and put it in a fantasy setting. They were extreme potty mouths for starters. Very high cussword rate. Very cocky, arrogant, full of bravado. Walk around like they own the place. Demons. Even if you Don't believe in that stuff, you'll see them in the flesh.

Don't join gangs. Stay away from them.
