Do you think you'll ever give up writing?

Interesting responses here. I don't draw, so for me writing takes up a good amount of time. I don't look at writing as easy or instant gratification. Perhaps that's because I don't do comics.

I didn’t mean that writing is the hardest thing ever or anything like this. You’re right, the fact that it’s is not physical makes a big difference and now I understand your point a little better (but writing can involve sleepless nights, too, depending of your schedule and else. Still, I don’t disagree with you, I’m just arguing about details that matter to me).

Writing anywhere, anywhen, it’s quickly said even if once again, I see you point. But, I’d like to say, anyone can “draw” as anyone can “write” for example. You get experience with practice in both case. And by resource, for writing, it’s less material and rather some researches (ok that’s not that much the case for most people but someone can spend hours, days to get necessary information). Once again I’m just speaking about details because you’re totally right. From the begin I didn’t want to compare writing with anything, it’s just that “low effort” seemed rough to me.

Also, by writing, I don’t mean writing actions without descriptions to free one’s mind of a plot or to just have a clear idea about something (like what will happen in a comic, for doing the writing part of some scenes and seeing my drawer who struggles without being able to help her I know it’s far, far easier and faster than the drawing part) but trying to convey an idea, a precis feeling, to make things smooth and pleasurable (not even for other, it may be, but for yourself, just you being satisfy with the quality you can produce)… for me it’s totally different. Maybe it’s because I’m partly talking about writing for others or I’m just so picky or perfectionist or slow (or crazy?) compared to the average people (I don’t know) but I’m not able to make a good paragraph in five minutes.
I mean, not at all.
It’s my point of view because I’d like to reach the “godly writing skill” that @69Erocento talks about ahah!

Now I just hope what I said is understandable.

I draw and I write, and even if I admit that I suffer much more from drawing than writing, it's not like I have ever tried to write a REAL BIG SERIOUS story. I mean, I don't think that writing is easy. It's just different. Everybody can write, yes, but with mistakes and sometimes it doesn't mean anything. Everybody can draw, but it could be very ugly. I can draw in 5 minutes or less but my drawing would be as bad as a 5 minutes writing paragraph. When you want to write seriously, you must think about spelling, grammar, ponctuation, and I'll not talk about your story that requires imagination, logic, and a lot of time to think about every sentence so that they can be clear, understable, and beautiful if you can. You can write for yourself, and quickly, but it's like a sketch, a doodle. A webcomic can take more than one year? A good book too. It's just that nowadays, people are forgetting that writing can be an art in itself by being easily satisfied with easy writing.
Someone that can write quickly something good is like someone that can draw quickly something beautiful, they have gained this ability with experience; or else they are genius x)))

please, it needs a little bit of experience, because someone that is writing in sms or with a lot of mistakes...I don't call that writing DDx My eyes are only bleeding ;_;
And you can draw with only a sheet and a pencil...easy, isn't it?

For the other hobbies, well, for me anything that want to be good needs training, it's same for writing, but I'm happy that it's something that is not expensive, and that everybody can try. All hobbies must be like this. (And about theatre, there were people who wrote the plays I don't think that Shakespeare is regarded as a good writer because it's easy )

--well well, sorry for my English, I'm not a native speaker but I wanted to share my point of view. I like writing but I'm often sad because it's too hard for me to write something long and good. I don't think I would be able to write a novel, so I'm sad that people think that it's easy

I guess for me, I don't always think of writing as the actual act of sitting down at your computer and writing something? Because there are definitely times when doing that is a total slog. But like, coming up with characters and figuring out plots, that's something I can never not do, because I love doing it too much, haha.

Oh I'm a stickler for grammar and punctuation when it comes to writing a creative piece that's meant to be viewed by others. Style and word choice are very important too. God, I've read so many cringe-inducing fanfics. I'm not saying writing doesn't require skill; I have standards. But good writing (what I define as good anyway) comes to me much easier than drawing something good, you know? I suppose I am a tougher art critic than I am writing critic.

I'm just saying the mere act of typing, formulating prose, and editing such requires less effort FROM ME, than my other skill of drawing.

And I know I struggle with descriptive writing, so I rarely do that. I mostly work in a script format. But even the proper fanfics I write, descriptions and transitions all together, come to my mind and are executed through my fingers on the keyboard much faster and with less effort than plugging in my tablet, firing up photoshop, and physically drawing it out.

mmmm yeah i understand what you mean. I guess, by low effort i mainly mean 'really accessible,' and its heavily influenced by my own experience of having really strenuous hobbies, and usually finding my flow very easily with writing.

I know writing takes skill and effort, I only merely say that between writing and drawing an event, writing will always be faster. Just one mere sentence of "A looks at B with hesitation before opening her mouth to talk" can already resolve in 2 or even 3 panels of exposition in comic.

All I'm saying here is that no, I will never stop writing, because it is something comes to me easily. I do it in my own time, for myself, even if I have bad writing I would still do it because it is the faster way to tell a story if I have to pick between drawing and writing.
