So this cuddly guy here is named Shnee.

Pretty simple name right? 5 letters, one syllable. It's just a completely random name I made up in middle school. As far as made up names go, I thought it'd be a pretty easy one to remember.

However, I've gathered quite a collection of the misspellings of his name by now. These include:
Schnee (Elegant German word for "Snow," the furthest thing from what Shnee is. Hands down most common misspelling)
Shinee (A freaking KPop band)
Shmee
Smee (Captain Hook's side kick)
And newest to the collection and my personal fav:
Sheen

To be clear, I'm not mad about this at all, I just find it hilarious that more people misspell Shnee than my main character's complicated made up name, Rexerse (Though he has his share of misspellings too, but I find that far more understandable).

So what about you guys? Do you have any characters whose names constantly get misspelled or remembered completely wrong?

HAHAHA this made me burst out laughing, not sure why xD

My OC's name is Tammy. It's pretty easy to remember... But I know some people spell it like "Tami" or "Tamie" or something  And multiple times have I seen people think it was Tommy... -sigh-

YEP I do actually LMFAO Most my character's names are super simple, but from time to time people still misspell a few character's names. The most common name that got misspell is this kid "Abel"

But almost everyone that dropped a Q&A on me about him somehow always call him Able... I assume:
1. Freaking mobile device's auto-correct (BUT WAIT ABEL IS AN ENGLISH NAME YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT AUTOCORRECT)
2. When you read it out loud, Abel and Able sound almost identical, which make people often mistype. Like me with my "walk" and "work" or other words that sound similar in my head but have total different meaning.

I kind of have the same thing going on! Thus far I haven't had anyone misspell my main character Midori's name, but people often misspell Grey as Gray. Which is understandable... I just don't like the A spelling ;u;

I can't help but imagining all these poor name-challenged characters having a very frustrating time at Starbucks XD

Yeah, I assume auto-correct can account for some of the misspellings.
Like I have a character named Padda and I've seen it come out as Panda in the comments.

But if a character's name is more than 5 letters long, I'm sure to have seen misspellings of it.

PANDA! I saw that and I proceeded to laugh my ass off, because he's lazy like a lil panda hahaha.

last september I got a message from michael son saying they were featuring my comic in the daily snack, which was awesome, but he called the comic alex in wunderland, twice. It's alec, but I wasn't about to correct him XD

I kinda knew my readers could get one of my character's name wrong, Eilidh (a fairly common Scottish name), because I had trouble remembering it too when I moved here. I mostly use Eli to make it easier.

@Tamanegi At least it's sorta easy to mistake Tammy for Tommy, especially with the wrong font. :'D Not gonna lie, because I'm looking at Tap's already small font on a really small screen (I'm on my tablet right now), I actually read "My OC's name is Tommy" the first time I read your post.

@69Erocento Man, I think prior to that anime Trinity Blood, I might have accidentally done that too. :'D Is it sad that was the first time I ever heard the name Abel (It's one of my favs now)? Oh well, maybe some day people will be Abel to get it right. (Please don't hurt me)

@Michelle One of my main character's last names is Grey! Honestly, until this year I sorta flip flopped between Grey and Gray because I just couldn't remember which was the right one. :'D
And oh lord, poor characters. Good thing Shnee is just a dog and couldn't care less.

@joannekwan I completely forgot about auto correct... Now that you mention it, I'm sure it is the culprit for a lot of the misspellings, though I AM certain a ton of people do think this big BLACK dogs name is Schnee.
Panda's great though, auto correct or not.

@mintycanoodles Omg, that's adorably awkward. I've sort of had similar situations where people call my comic "The City of Blanks" or something (It's just City of Blank), but that's pretty understandable.

@MissMagicGirl I sorta get that one too. I have a character named Lys and sometimes she gets called Liz. Once again though, I sorta get that one since it's a weird spelling (Though it's not pronounced like Liz at all).

@miseryhunting How exactly do you pronounce Eilidh? I actually had an old friend named Keilidh and I was always too ashamed to ask her how to actually pronounce her name. /)w(\

I have a character one or two people call Tanning Bed or Tanning Bus when his name is Tantibus.
Most of the time with other characters it's "whatshisname" or "that guy, I like that guy".

I drew this a while back to express my feelings, with the comment "forget patreon, this is how I'm making all my money"

It's just odd because he's got a pretty simple name compared to characters like "Æmber" and "Neiunthei," who don't have this problem. Even when the name "Jonan" is on the page or in another comment or in my description of the page, he gets:

Jonah
Jonas
Johan

None of these are correct.

I haven't noticed anyone spell Deceria wrong on tapastic, but in person the worst pronunciation I've heard was Darcy, which is not even close.

Haha sort of off topic, but this whole discussion reminds me of back when no one knew how to pronounce Hermione. They just read it wrong for the entirety of the first HP book. Then when the movies came out and people heard the real pronunciation, they were just like..........oh.

Surprisingly enough, the comments that I'm aware of, I haven't gotten any misspellings? There aren't a lot of super uncommon names

Then again not a lot of people refer to my characters by name so???

@indagold Tanning Bus has to be my favorite on this thread so far

@shazzbaa I honestly need to make one of these just for the Schnee misspelling alone. The simple names being spelled wrong is honestly the best

@deceriacomics Holy crap, that's a flash back. I remember my mom use to read the books to me and she pronounced it Her-mee-on. |D SO glad that's not how it was actually pronounced. I remember seeing entire debates about her name on forums.

@heterodont True! I'd probably see even more misspellings of my main character's name if people actually said his name more. Though a lot of people just also shorten his name to Rex which probably saves a lot of misspellings too.

Eh, most of my characters have common names (Daniel, Wayne, Tim, Frank...) so them being called the wrong name and misspellings don't happen often. Though I guess people have a tendency to call Christine "Christy" for short when her nickname's "Chrissy", but I don't consider that a huge deal.

I don't know about spelling, I think I've gotten a lot of aberrations from people about names. verses actually writing them out. I'm not sure if it's because they can't spell it or they don't really fully remember the name.
possible because the names are really strange: Zautcha, chu-chang, Eaucha, Huā, Tamagi-zu,( the zu is pronounced using the Chinese zu sound) oyaluyang ect. partially because of the names in general sound strange to most people.

mostly I have people who cannot pronounce the names. Either they ask me how to say them or they actually try to say it to me. So I can hear them.

Roxy's pronunciation is always correct, but some people seem to have trouble with the spelling. I've noticed many spell it as 'Roxie'.

Readers tend to mix up Era and Aeon's names a lot. Though that's understandable.

When it comes to pronouncing the names (You're usually not able to tell anyway because you can't hear how your readers pronounce names), I got a comment from someone felling dumb about not realizing until now that Era and Aeon were time themed names. So they were pronouncing Aeon as "Aye-on" instead of "E-on"

Also my little sister used to pronounce Osiris as "Oz-er-iss" for the longest time, though now she pronounces it correctly to sound more like "Oh-sigh-ris"
