Does ANYONE know how to mask in Krita?!

I'm trying to figure out how to paint digitally, and the course I'm looking into is tackling masking for painting next. It's using Photoshop, but I'm using Krita. Photoshop has mask layers, but if Krita does have them I can't find them! I'm trying to do something like the mask in this video (2:18-2:37).

If anyone knows how to do this in Krita, or in another cheap/ free program I'd be really grateful!

You can either go to the Layer menu at the top and Convert and then you've got Masks there, which should convert you layer and whatever's on it into a mask. Or at the bottom of your Layers docker there should be the Add Layer button. If you click the little arrow next to that it brings up options for different types of new layers including masks. Slightly. But there are three different types of masks (transparency, filter, etc.) I'm not sure which will get what I need. I'm trying to do something like whats in this video.

For that sort of thing it should be a Transparency Mask.

Or alternately there are Clipping Masks and Alpha Inheritance which are similar but work in layer groups, it's a bit of a complicated explanation for what's basically "if you use Inherit Alpha it'll crop to everything below it"
