I completely understand. I was the same with characters+plot vs backgrounds. I also went on an asset hunt when I first started using Sketchup But! After hours of trying to compose my first scene and trying to find and manipulate assets, I realized that there will never be a perfect asset and some things are just easier to draw. Another great side effect of using sketchup: I got better at drawing backgrounds when I'm not using Sketchup at all xD My brain kind of started seeing 3D space better, and my little practice turned out to be really useful.
Oh no, I am using it! I just dumped the online version, because it was bad.
The house took maybe an hour, and I probably spent a half of that time trying to understand how to make that drainpipe. I joked later on my socials that that pipe grew polygons on the way down and I didn't know why I spent way much longer on drawing the actual thing - about 3-4 hours, but considering the amount of windows and detail that's ok. It would probably take the same time to do this in 3D, but yet again, drawing upon a rough base was easier for me.
CSP is great and using small props or models comes in really handy, but... I've been using it for years and still can't figure out how perspective rulers work
Now I remembered why I stopped using the free online version x)
For everyone in this thread:
There is an old free desktop version of SketchUp which you can download and install, it's called SketchUp Make. It starts as a Pro for a month, if I remember correctly, and then reverts to Make which is still good. You need to go here https://help.sketchup.com/en/downloading-older-versions And grab SketchUp Make 2017.
