I get the commercial need to advertise to get more readers for the income-generating comics. That makes totally sense.
However, if the advertisement does not get enough people from a certain category to actually read the comics, then everyone is losing.
It's pretty clear from what I see in the forum that the average creator has slightly different interests than the average non-creator reader. Which is expected. Being a creator sure gives a different perspective. This is probably why there is so much frustration.
Frankly, being bombarded by ads for stories that are offputting for an individual creator, not only is useless in term of income, but likely give a bad name to all premium comics/novels. It can give the feeling that Premium is 'not for me', especially when a lot of ads are for very similar stories.
It goes further than reading too: I do not participate in contests for free bonus ink because I have no idea what to do with the ink, as I was forcefully made to believe no Premium stories are for me. I know I'm not the only one avoiding these contests for the same reason.
Now, Tapas could say, creators are only a little part of the cake, they likely have little money to spend, why even worry?
Which make sense if there were only the creators. But there are not just them who may be put off by the non-personalized ads. Many readers could be kept, or made more active, and generate more income, if the ads were personalized.
I think at least a certain level of personalization need to be made in the future. I understand it is not necessarily doable overnight, but there are usable bases to make that happen (eg using people's libraries, plus now we have more specific category combinations, thus there is certainly significant data for a personalization tool to be developped).
