The chapter opens with a flashback to Albus’s previous life as a small child. He approaches other kids playing in a park and asks to join, only for their mothers to quickly pull them away while looking at him with judging eyes. He’s left alone on the swing, watching the sun set while listening to its chains creak in the wind.
It's been about a month since Albus (the protagonist) was found dying in an unknown forest. He now finds himself in a small quiet village after being found by a young couple. He spends most of his mornings staring out the window, watching the village children play.
Rennan (the husband) says he’s noticed how much time Albus spends staring out the window and wonders if he wants to play with the other kids. Albus quickly denies it, but stops himself. Then he quietly admits he does want to try, but he’s scared of what they might think of him.
Rennan calls to Lina (the wife) and suggests they introduce Albus to the rest of the village. Lina agrees and takes Albus by the hand. Together, they step outside. Villagers begin to greet Albus kindly. A few kneel down and introduce themselves, Albus is too shy to speak up.
Lina and Rennan give Albus a tour of the village, eventually introducing him to village leader. He's delighted to finally meet him.
As they return home, Lina and Rennan praise Albus for how far he’s come—from a boy too scared to leave the house to someone brave enough to greet strangers.
Albus returns to the bedroom window and looks out again. He sees the same swing from before. But this time, it’s not empty. He quietly compares that lonely memory of his old life to now… and realizes he’s no longer alone.
