Ever got a a comparison?

Avatar and Phobs (artist) are the things people mention the most when comparing West to something else. I really appreciate it, but they're flattering me far too much. I'm no where near as good as either (though I don't know anything about Avatar).

Grassblades has been compared to a bunch of things, most notably Avatar the Last Airbender/Legend of Korra, Samurai Jack, Lone Wolf and Cub, Usagi Yojimbo and Blade of the Immortal.

Which are all hugely flattering comparisons to make - and out of all of those, the only one that I can say for sure isn't a direct influence on the mess of things that eventually became Grassblades is Samurai Jack. And then only because I've seen half an episode of Samurai Jack and know very little about it.

It's nice to get the flattering comparisons like this - I mean, who doesn't like hearing that their work reminds readers of Stan Sakai, who is a freaking master of the craft - but at the same time I like that it doesn't happen all the time, I guess? I mean, I want Grassblades to be its own thing, even though there is a lot of influence of other works in its DNA.

A bunch of people have compared my character Andreas to Tavros from Homestuck. I guess it's his appearance only(?) because I don't know much about Homestuck and how the character actually is.

@joannekwan - I'm pretty sure the reasoning is character with horns = Homestuck at this point.

i know people mean well when they compare works but sometimes it just feels a little... invalidating? like sometimes it's flattering but sometimes it comes off like a jab at the originality of your comic, which can hurt.
the comparison i get a LOT for a book for monsters is steven universe. i understand where people are coming from(it IS an influence) but sometimes it feels like people are focusing more on the commonalities with su than the actual original content and story. i assume this won't happen as much when the characters are more developed but it kind of makes me doubt myself as an author if i apparently can't make something substantially different from the things i enjoy as a fan

yea i know what you mean, sometimes people tend to overreact to the fact that popular things are going to influence other peoples work, but it hurts when people overreacts to that fact, like, if you take inspirations and references, thats ok, i mean thats what media is for, to inspire and to make people happy. and of course to help people create. what hurts is that when people even get offended by your inspirations..that sucks

yeah, i get what you think, sometimes becomes like a thing when getting comparisons, even if you came first with the idea.

Hey, @Oboroten - here's a handy tip for forum-usage! Instead of making a new post to reply to each comment, you can do one post, and just reply by using people's @-names! That way, they get notified of the reply, and you don't have to clog up the whole thread with a dozen postsof your own. =)

Over the Garden Wall XD Tales from the Well will probably be eternally compared to it but I don't mind. I got a lot of readers interested in reading it because I make the comparison myself X)

For my other series Manna Magi: Blood Moon the main lead gets compared to Steven Universe. Occasionally comparisons between Harry Potter and Homestuck are made. For this series some of the characters have horns so yeah @AnnaLandin :b

Voidchild's art recently got compared to the original Onepunch Man comic by ONE. WHICH I TAKE AS A COMPLIMENT BECAUSE THAT GUY IS A BLOODY INSPIRATION! Also that guy obviously has good storytelling sense obviously considering how things went for him. I just added the caps because some might misconstrue and think I don't consider it a compliment if they've seen his stuff.

I am often compared to Junji Ito, namely for my comic Weird Tales of Elderfield. It isn't a surprising comparison, though sometimes it can be annoying that it's the only comparison, as my style (and Ito's for that matter) is styled after a number of other horror manga artists, but they are much less known in the west.

I've also noticed that if you draw anything even remotely creepy, prepare to be compared to Tim Burton many, many times, even if you aren't similar at all.

FMA which is...really weird because I never watched it besides the first two episodes.

It's because of the seven deadly sins thing. On the inside though, I'm glad that I'm being compared to something with such high acclaim and quality, even if it wasn't a source of inspiration for me.

bless you cuz ONE is great. at this point, i'm kinda already tired of the Murata redraw cuz he adds a lot of scenes that i find boring because, imo, he doesn't really get that the whole cast is a joke and Saitama has to arrive to deliver the punchline and if he doesn't, the cast isn't... interesting... Except, like, the S heroes but Murata hasn't gotten to the meat of that arc yet.

i've only gotten one comparison so far from a friend about my main character.

she reminds her of Luna from some old anime called Planet Survival that I'd never heard of before :'D
i'm waiting for someone to notice that she's totally Chizuru from Kimi ni Todoke as she's been on my mind since I designed Kayna >u>;;;

also to the thread op: that was a great self-promotion because i instantly felt a need to see if you live up to those comparisons xD
