Ever got a a comparison?

I know i did, in the creation of comics or worlds for roleplaying, ive been compared to many other creative people, from studio ghibli or Heath ledger (in acting skills) as a game master i am always changing beetween characters and NPCs, so this time i was monologing as two nps who happened to be having an argument, and all my players stared at the whole scene as if the NPCS where really there, arguing, and after that my friend said, "- dude, that was amazing!, i totally believed the scene, i did not saw you there, but i saw the characters having this discussion"-
that meant a lot to me as a creator, because my world and characters really felt alive, i as game master totally dissapeared behind my work. and that what is happening now with my new comic series, The war of Skyslead is a story created with the same concepts as when i create stories and dungeons for my gaming sessions. so maybe thats why people are liking it. i even got compared to studio Ghibli, that is pretty wicked! to be near around the name even only in comparison. It motivates me to keep working on the series, it makes me feel i am doing something right for a change...

so, have you ever expereienced something similar? id love to know, what have been your comparisons?

Oh yeah. We get compared to Legend of Korra ALL the time. We'd come up with the design for our lead character years before Korra came out. When I saw the work for Korra as a WoC with hair bands I was flipping tables! So frustrating when those little coincidences come around. But I can't really argue with being compared to quality stuff like Avatar >.>

I get undertale a lot, which has been interesting because I didn't know what undertale was at first. Still don't know a lot about it, but I gather it's a good thing to be compared to.

Crow's Worth has been compared to Naruto...which makes sense because it was originally suppose to be a Naruto parody comic...however I gave up on the whole "parody" part after the first few chapters and just did my own thing. However, I have had people say they refuse to read it because they either hate Naruto or know nothing about Naruto.

In high school, people compared me to Tim Burton...which is ironic cause I am not much of a fan of his work. And also my stuff looks nothing like Burton. I've also been compared to Ghibli...similar to the Burton comments, I have no idea why.

Both myself and Bryan Lee O'Malley have cute/simplified styles and draw characters who are in bands but also battle sometimes.

Lucy get's compared to Kurisu from Stein's Gate, Elesis from Elsword, Black Rock Shooter, and some character from High School DXD...

The one thing that annoys me more than that is when my story gets compared to Bleach even though I don't watch that anime. I want to flip a table whenever I hear that.

is compared to Ciel Phantomhive from Black Butler a lot, like, a lot.

its interesting, because they do not look nothing a like, i get different vibes from both characters, markesha looks like a tigress or a feline, while korra seems very brute and powerful.

yah! nowadays is very hard to come up with something that do not resembles any other thing the is popular or already there! even tho ppl tend to like similar things on their series!!!

I have had my work compared to David Lynch's work, David Firth's work and... Tim Burton. I know people get pissed about saying your work looks Tim Burton because he's popular, to me I just find his art eh...
But the real cake topper is some of my work attracted stoners and one listed specific drugs that you could take that resembled my work. That's right, they know specific drugs that resemble my art style...
I guess it's better than "lol you must take drugs that's why your work is so weird!!!"

then again I can't really fault the people who make the comparisons because the characters they constantly compare to Homestuck trolls also have weird colored skin and horns so....I can let it slide. Not to mention I did take some influence from HS because I was starting work on my own comic when I was still really involved with the comic (2009).

Except the one time someone said the plot of my story was too similar to homestuck which I still don't understand to this day.

You talk about comparisons that are a good thing, and that's great, but there's a whole range of them that I personally experienced.

There's the ones that make me feel happy, like when my stuff is compared to series I like. (Trigun for example) I like to put subtle references from the animes I enjoyed, and it feels great when people notice that, and be polite about it.

Then there's the comparisons that are kinda ok, when people compare my characters to the ones I never knew about, but they feel excited about it, so it's ok I guess. I get a bit uneasy thought that I may accidentally make mine too similar to the ones I don't know about, which leads to:
The rude comparisons that you feel like being judged or accused of your characters being a rip-off.

And then there's the comparisons when people compare their OC's to yours and be really annoying about it. Like "oh no, your OC has hair like mine, ZOMG I have to redesign mine again, or else he's not original enough!!!1!!" or rude shits like "our characters look the same, how dare you!!!! I demand that you redesign yours this instant, or even better just scrap that entirely!"
