For your series, what are you studying/researching now?

Due to story it's time I have to work a bit on my worldbuilding. I'm checking on the origins of our 'week' & 'month', so I won't blindly use the terms.

As my story world is a fantasy place/planet I'll use alternative names for "week" & "month", but I'll keep 'day' as it's very common for readers. Trying to come ot with easy namings without bamboozling readers .

I research several things for my comic. Most complicated is - submarine. A big part of my comic in it. A team of people eill be travelling to certain location, and i reading a lot about engines, physics, technology e.t.c. I planning to go to the museum next week and have a tour to see submarine inside... I don't know how much of this knowledge i need, but i prefer to think the more i know the more realistic it will feel. Also i read about biology and molecular staff in general because science also play a role in the plot ... To be honest i hate machines and techs, but I'll do anything for a good story.

aaaaanyway I have no qualms blindly use terms for my fantasy series when I get around to drawing it; going with whatever I feel is intuitively fitting without regard for historical context I will avoid stuff that seem too on-the-nose though (like I'll say 'constructed mind' instead of 'artificial intelligence' which feels like it has very modern connotations, but will stick with 'week' which doesn't call attention to any particular time period for most people I'm aware of XD)

For my current series though; I've been looking up D&D abilities and broken builds/combos since I'm about to introduce a character who's a total munchkin in tabletop RPGs and I needed to write her Establishing Character Moment I'm using a fictional RPG and I didn't want to be too on-the-nose anyway, but the research gave me a good impression of what kind of abilities (power-wise) her character should have at that point and how I could make her come across as clever but also slightly obnoxious XD

I am researching Chinese culture, cities, people, and famous locations. And since I have a fighting novel I also research different fighting styles, most of which come from webtoons such as Lookism or Hanlim Gym. Other than that just check Google Earth every now and again to make sure that the place where I set my scenes are accurate and actually real places.

Hooo boy... so I have two projects I'm researching for.

First one is for The Changeling's Sister, and for that I have a good backlog of fairytales, celtic mythology and fairy folklore deep dives. Also a nice, unexpected trip down floral meanings, herbal witchcraft and flower symbolism.

For the next project I have a BUNCH of topics I have to read up on... a lot of different mythologies and cultures, mostly Middle Eastern, Egyptian and other African cultures, plus animal behaviours and family patterns, just to mention a few...

I am currently reading a survival book, because I am not an expert on navigation and shipwreck issues. I don't want to describe crude details like the ones in the book, because they might be too strong and the story I'm posting is "sweet", but I'm taking each of those details into account.

I’ve also been researching very very heavily on The Victorian Era (specifically the 1890s) for my Steampunk series Elsie. Personally I didn’t like the typical steampunk fashion look I thought it was weird so I took a more historical approach to the fashion in the story.

I researched about trains, how the railways were very innovative. Life before electricity. Elsie as my vision of it will have no electricity in sight. Just gas lamps and candles and fire.

I also did some research on how The English treated The Irish at this point in time (spoilers terribly) as one of my main antagonists is of Irish origin Ernest McDermott. Speaking of him, for his character I’ve also been researching how basically anyone could be a doctor in the Victorian era and doctors basically preformed surgery as spectacles for entertainment and profit. As well as selling you literal crappy medicine saying “this’ll cure all your problems! Yay!” Most of the time it was just alcohol or opium and it didn’t help at all.

I could talk about my research done for Elsie all day but I wouldn’t want to spoil the story.

i remember looking into different cultural and religious interpretations of life, death, rebirth and the afterlife at one point tho i'm mostly winging it since i'm homebrewing my own thing. the last one i remember exploring a bit more in depth was the Samsara cycle in Buddhism

i think the next thing on the itinerary will likely be architecture stuff and floor plans for different kinds of houses and apartments

My novel is about the MC opening his own clinic in a fantasy world. So I have to research the operations, diseases, the game elements such as system are also included, since he runs his own clinic I also have to research how to operate and function a business. Also, research about the nobles and create world laws. I also have a map of the area made in my mind. It can be taxing but I do love how the story is turning out and I try to reread everything in case I missed anything to change on the status of the MC. ....

Catholicism (wanna study more about the lady saints like Dorothy Day the anarchist or Juana de la Cruz), music (funk/Bootsy Collins, Rick James, Prince, and George Clinton), and fashion (androgynous, Prince related) (always wanted to be a fashion designer, so you KNOW this is going to be an outlet for me). I already finished my course in psychology and I know I'm going to do some stuff with that.

This is for my next story though mainly.

@tarraxahum Ooooh, a fighting story? One thing I recommend about this is trying out the fighting styles out first hand if you haven't.... although finding a proper coach is hard af. Especially since they focus more on the entire class than one person and as a result, they try to catch you up?

Yeah I tragically lack time and funds right now to try anything out myself (in an approproate setting and with a coach I mean), so for now I'm sticking to educational materials. Sure would love to try out stuff myself one day tho.

Considering the fact that I'm trying to give each character their own way of fighting, I wouldn't be able to try out them all anyway ^^"

Also for Cracking Eggs in general I took all my obsessive and hyper fixated research on British culture and lingo and use it for the story. I have cousins from England so they are my real gate to the other side of the pond.

I’ve been researching since about 2020 ish yah know when Covid hit and everything shut down. I didn’t come up with Cracking Eggs until at the end of 2021 but I used all my knowledge from my research about The British and put it in my story for it.

I’m American but my mother was a Shakespeare major in college and loves Jane Austen watches great British baking show. Naturally it came to me and I found British cartoons more interesting than American ones when I was little (but only certain shows but Phineas and Ferb was all I liked) yet the step dad was BRITISH and FERB WAS BRITISH. It was honestly only destiny. It was destiny.

Lately... anatomy, anatomy, anatomy. Specifically female muscle anatomy.

My series is 50% teen drama, 50% battle manga. Like most battle manga the fighters are muscular and take a ton of damage... but my fighters are all female so that posed a challenge.

I wanted to get the anatomy right, but also give each character a unique design/body type. I'm really trying to avoid the DBZ syndrome of every character looking exactly the same. I love DBZ but we all know its true lol.

Basketball, the next storyline is going to be a Basketball comic called TwistJam. It will be a crossover between Hawk and Flo Adventures, Cosmic Dash, and Crowcaster. MK Wizard's characters will be making cameo appearances and I will be asking many people on here if they would like their characters to make background cameos once I get closer to the release date. ^^;.
