people see something they think looks kind of dumb and silly and think "Why is that comic popular and mine isn't?" without objectively being able to see why it works. It's never by some weird marketing miracle that makes what some people might think is absolute garbage turns out to be extremely popular. It can be helped by marketing, but it HAS to be marketable in the first place.
As someone whose comic did manage to get fairly popular due to some marketing miracles, ^this.
In order to even begin marketing your comic, you have to know who your audience is, and where those people might be.
People get so caught up about their first chapter of their first comic not being an overnight success, and I'm sometimes not sure of the best way to say "hey buddy, that's normal; you've only just started, and in my experience getting any readers on your first comic is a big win".
(Though, to be fair many people seem to making debut comics with better art/writing than I started out with)
