Hello,
I've been doing my comic, BOHICA Blues, for about 10 years now. It is technically a long-form story, but told in gag-a-day format, which is kind of hard sometimes.
In the world of webcomics I've seen a lot of talk about whether it is better to do a long form story, or to stick to gag-a-day comics. The advantages of the long-form story are obvious: you can develop characters, tell a real story, keep readers coming back. On the flipside, the creator is kind of "stuck" with the characters and situations created and it can be difficult to explore other ideas on a whim.
Gag-a-day comics, on the other hand, can explore flights of fancy or whimsey, dire consequences experienced by characters can be dismissed later when convenient, and readers can come in at any time without needing to go back and read previous episodes to know what's going on. The downside of course is that there's usually not a lot of character development opportunity, and of course there's nothing compelling readers to stick around.
I'm curious what other creators like or dislike about gag-a-day or long-form stories. Has anyone started a project in one format and then wished they'd done something else? There's some great gag-a-day comics here (I like "Litterbox" by Chesca Hause) and some gag-a-day comics are telling long-form stories ("The Little Trashmaid"). I also follow some long-form stories like "We Are the Wirecats", and "Space Shipping", among others.
Since this is technically "Promotions", I'd like to offer my creation, BOHICA Blues, for anyone interested. It is a family-friendly historical comedy about the Iraq War (sort of like the classic TV show "M*A*S*H" if you're familiar with that). As mentioned, it is a long-form story told in gag-a-day format, so class 1-to-4 panel comics with the occasional multi-page "special" every so often.
