Gimme, gimme! I need, I need!

Hey folks!

I'm bored and I'm trying out a new way of coloring. Well. More like I'm trying real hard to get comfortable with colors. Give me someone, anyone, and I'll do a portrait of them - original character, famous musician, your random friend, you name it, I probably won't know it. It'll all be neck and up, most likely, and the picture doesn't even have to be in color, while that is preferred. I'm just trying to figure out palettes and shading and nonsense.

Anyways, end point, give me pictures of things! I wish to draw them!

This character is an unfinished project I'd been fooling around with a year ago. I was just playing with shapes and this is the first design that I came up with... nothing special, a little lopsided and awkward in some spots, but whatever -she's just a rough sketch anyway. I'm probably never going to finish her, but if you want something to fiddle with then she has a lot of potential, I think. You can just add colour to the original design, change her face up, add hair, accessorize, whatever you want. It would be cool to see what other people create out of her. Like I said, she is incomplete, so enjoy! Her sci-fi feel also allows for a nice variety of colour palettes.

Also, don't feel obligated to use her if you don't want to! It's just an option

PS. If anyone else wants to play around with her design, feel free to! I'd like to see the finished product though

I wouldn't consider him an OC xD I got bored and made a fusion between the Cheshire Cat and The Rabbit from Alice In Wonderland. I like how it came out and just made it my artist mascot. if you want to draw him and play with colors go right ahead.

I'm on it! I should have all three of your guy's things out before noon tomorrow! I'll also be actively taking requests for at least the next week or so, in case anyone's like "This seems cool. But not now, I'm busy." I like doing this kind of thing though, to be honest, so really this'll probably last until the day (horror upon horrors) I become inactive.

Here's a good tutorial to check out with regards to color: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Tutorial-17-A-turtle-walkthrough-345468329 (Cyril Rolando is a really talented colorist & digital painter, and in my opinion an excellent study)

If you're having a lot of difficulty grasping color, though, it may be a symptom of another difficulty you have. If, for example, you don't have a solid grasp on shading - your colors are always going to look flat, lifeless, grade-schooler 'color in the lines' kind of stuff. In which case, rather than practicing color, practicing shading may be better in terms of your advancement.
If you happen to be an artist who does most/all of your shading using opaque black & white over solid color? Then it's probably worth looking into studying, as you need to have a good grasp on light & shading before you can solidly move on to color manipulation. For shading practice, I'd suggest you practice painting still life/realism pictures (like the one TristanJensen provided for study), in some very basic values (black, white, light gray, dark gray).
I don't know your art or your exact situation, so I figured I'd just put that tidbit out there.

Thanks for all this info! I just have a bad issue with always making black and white draws. Which is fine by itself, but I know that I need to break out of it. And thus, I'm challenging myself a little. I just need to work on getting comfortable with colors, and learning how to bust out the full color portraits with speed. That link seems really helpful, though. Thank you!

I will freely admit to you right now, I gave up a little on the eyes. Basically just slapped on a highlight and called the piece finished. However, I really, really like how I made that hair omg. First time I tried using this method to create hair, and I'm liking it a lot. I lost the eyebrows in the bangs, but let me just assure you, I was inspired by the last pic you gave me. Inspired.
