Okay the way E.X.O. gets featured is because
1. Roye's from Nigeria and he's working to create the first comic work born from and focusing on Nigeria/Africa as more than a "place where starving people live." He's got a great angle for media, because he's a really cool guy, with an awesome idea and he's cutting a brand new path for diverse and unique storytelling from a diverse voice.
2. Roye's STELLAR at the hustle. He's been doing small cons, big cons, going through every media outlet he can and more. The guy knows how to sell his stuff and uses his connections with industry contacts and helpareporter.com (AKA: HARO).
3. He had a SUPER successful kickstarter and was (if I remember correctly) featured on the site as a staff pick.
4. You'll notice that on his site he's got a specific section called "Media Kit" this is something that EVERY comics main website should have. A media kit is a zip file that provides a person in the media with:
- the cliffnotes version of your comic
- who you are
- where they can find you
- where you've been featured
- your accomplishments
- what makes your project special
- images they can use for broadcast/web
- logos
- sample pages
- photos of you/team (head shots, you working, convention appearances/booth)
- development art
- book covers
- how you can be contacted.
His blog is full of awesome ideas, interviews and discussions on how to help with marketing and connecting your comic work to what people in all kinds of media news outlets might need.
You can find it here -> http://youneekstudios.com/blog/
The best way to get your comic to the media is to make yourself readily available and easily accessible for folks in the media. If you're EASY to find you're more likely to be involved. Additionally, don't be afraid to reach out to local outlets in your city. No media outlet is too small. We started on some tiny podcasts and within a few months got on our local Atlanta NPR station (you can listen here)!
Pics or it didn't happen:
TL;DR - If Media can't find you or if they can't get what they need quickly you won't be contacted for stories. Put a Media Kit on your website!
