Have you ever gotten jealous from the success of a newer comic/novel?

I don't really get too jealous of other's successes, after all each and everyone has their own journey in creating. I do get irritated when people are treated online based on how well their work does, in the sense that people ignore creators as a person if their works are smaller or not to their liking.

I really admire how everyone can produce a lot in a short time. I got work, class and besides my own projects I help other creators with their projects as well. at the moment I can't update even one page every week, but its nothing to feel jealous over. I really admire those creators who can.

I don't really get jealous, I either admire something or ignore it. The thing I care about the most is presenting my story as it is and if I have to be honest, it's better to start off small but ending up big. I honestly prefer to be small, especially in this period because I'm overworked by school and I wouldn't be able to manage success .
Never rush things, every case is different and takes its time. Some instantly rise to success, others take a little longer, that's how it works.
The suggestion I would like to give you is: do the best you can! Always try to surpass yourself! (As cliché as it might sound, it actually works )

I would be a liar if I said no. I feel a mixture of happiness and jealousy when someone posts a couple of pages and skyrockets to huge numbers overnight. I clench my fist and think god I wish that was me and then I get over it and get back to work.

I think what matters is how one acts out their jealousy. I recognize I'm feeling jealous, that it's natural and work on it in a healthy way. Sometimes it drives me to be better and work harder. But some people become bitter and lash out in anger, even going so far to badmouth and attack other creators. That's unhealthy and will only harm them (and their creative efforts) in the long run.

Yes, totally. I don't dwell on this for long, but this whiney feeling of "boohoo, I wish I was like that" is there. I don't think it's bad though, it's a normal thing to want something better for yourself.
What I usually remember in these situations is that I probably haven't done enough to be on this place. I haven't done enough updates, my speed is too slow... well, maybe I am also not in the best place in the right time.
Also I have no idea what this particular author did to be at this place, and I definitely never belittle other people's work. Maybe I work hard, but so do they (and most likely harder).
And it's always helpful to go and look what was that made this particular work successful!
Like a year ago I followed this comic on WT and... It went Original in 4 updates or so. Can you believe? In a month! But was it a good comic that deserved it? Yeah! I mean, I followed it myself So yeah, in the end I don't think this feeling is bad, you just don't have to stay salty or bitter or whatever other adjectives English has for this state

I think I’m more of a fan girl really.

If I see something awesome I’ll say so. I’ll compliment, like, subscribe etc. I’m quite content and not money driven (with comics anyway) so just here to look at and learn stuff.

If I’m jealous of anything (well envy really) it is people with self confidence. That’s what I struggle with - in all aspects of life.

... though saying that if I suddenly did find success (is that popularity?) I’d not know what to do with that.

Oh definitely. I mean, I'm only human, so even though I'm not proud of it, and rationally I know I shouldn't, I'd be lying if I said I was some kind of amazingly high-minded person who never feels jealousy when some 22 year old stumbles onto the platform with practically their first comic and it's something derivative that they make up as they go along about a bunch of identically pretty characters just sort of milling around being cinnamon buns with no particular substance and I just have to sigh as they rocket up the sub counts while I have to agonisingly grind my way up there even after over a decade of being a pro illustrator.

But you know... I chose to make a comic in the action genre. I knew this wouldn't be easy. If I wanted to get success fast, I knew Romance would be a better choice, but I also knew that if I wanted to make a living making comics full time, they'd need to be comics I actually enjoy making. I'm happy with my comic's modest, growing popularity. It's doing okay, and to call it a "failure" would be a really crappy thing when a lot of people get stuck on much lower numbers. I'm going to try an off-site advertising campaign, keep making pages, and basically focus on what's within my power to do instead of lamenting stuff I can't control.

Funnily enough I'm jealous of the success of my own comic (lost Firstborn). It's gotten almost 100 followers, which might be small numbers compared to some other comics, but it's big numbers for me. Don't get me wrong, I am happy that people enjoy that comic, but I'd also love for my first comic (Bestia's Wrath) to get similar kind of attention, because it's the one that I pour the most effort in, and the one that is a long-term project unless I come up with a sequel to Lost Firstborn after it's finished.

When I see a comic with much better art, pace and dialogue than my own get recognized ... no, I don't get jealous.

But when I see a comic with worse art, worse dialogues and an uber common theme completely annihilating mine in terms of readers ... then, yeah. Or maybe, I don't get jealous, but I get angry at the community for not giving my series its due.

Then I remember the majority of the community isn't even aware of my story, and I feel better about it.

I blame Tapas' god awful unjust 'invisible to the naked eye in mobile until you get a thousand views' policy. Screw that.

Yeah for sure, mostly about engagement outside of tapas. But I come from a quite strange perspective since I had a ca. 200 sub comic for 3 years and then made an AU of it that took off within a few months and its now at 3k so I guess I've been on both sides of the situation, even though 3k still isn't enough to be part of the tapas "elite"... But even though I have a good amount of subs on tapas I haven't even broken 200 followers on twitter so you know, it's not all what it seems to be haha

Edit: but as many here have also said, I don't get angry or spiteful that people have more success than me, it's better to just say hm I hope to get there some day and also put effort into networking and making friends so you can all help each other

I don't really get 'jealous' of people, but I think it's perfectly natural to do so. It's difficult when you put a huge amount of work into what are essentially passion projects to get what feels like zero recognition. But you gotta look at the bigger picture. Becoming a big hit overnight in the comic/novel world is about 90% luck in terms of going viral or whatever. @Rhonder hit the nail exactly on the head!

Life’s too short to entertain too many negative emotions. It’s tiring and counterproductive... it monopolizes too much energy that’d be better spend elsewhere...
Besides, I seldom find comics similar to mine (that’s why I’m doing it ), so when I do find one, I generally support it, disregarding of its success... my purpose is the message more than my work, so when someone delivers it better than I do and/or to a wider audience, I’m in the crowd cheering (even though I’d obviously love for my work to be more popular and beloved)...

Yes, I do, but I try not to dwell on it and instead try to supplant that feeling with "Well, good for them, this is a tough field to succeed in." And I try to keep in mind that usually with "overnight successes" there's typically a number of underlying years of effort this person was going through before they became a success. A lot of times I'll see a successful young creative and think they came out of nowhere, but when I do a little more research into their background I find out they've actually been at it since they were a teenager posting doodles on Tumblr. If they're currently a professional, I'd see that they were never actually able to make a living off of their art until years into their career. I just started being serious about my art this year, who am I to expect an accelerated rate of growth?

I put off making art for so long because I thought to myself "If I'm ever going to be successful at that, it wouldn't happen until 10 years later or something, so I should probably dedicate my time to something more productive." But then I realized that those 10 years passed regardless and maybe if I had put in more of an effort 10 years ago I'd be further along than I am now.

I mostly do my comic for fun so I try not to view another person's success through the lens of jealousy. But I do think it's human nature to get a little envious about things like this. I was raised to have a mindset of "success is the only option" and it's been a long process of trying to break that mold and understand that you can do things for reasons other than being the best/most successful. I try to see comic making as a purely fun hobby for me, but if feelings of envy ever do come up, I try to use it to fuel the opportunity to re-evaluate my process and see if there are things that I can improve upon!

I try not to dwell on it and get jealous but sometimes I always end up blaming myself and wondering what I'm doing wrong.

I usually have to talk to friends and my cowriter to slowly knock myself out of it but sometimes I can't help but be a little... frustrated? And I blame myself most of the time for it.

I've always considered jealousy and envy wasteful emotions that hinder your progress. As I have nothing to lose by someone else's success jealousy doesn't play in my universe. Envy? Well, I'm 5' 1" I tend to envy those tall folks who can reach the top shelf. On the other hand, if I fall down the distance is shorter.

All kidding aside. I think it's normal to have a "gee, wish that was me" twinge now and then. But it's not ok to dwell on it, it will just bring you down. And it doesn't matter what the other person creates, whether you think it mediocre or grand, they're not you, you should only compete with yourself, after all you don't know what the other person has gone through or has to do to get where they are. Forgiv the cliche but everyone is a little like an iceberg, what you see on the surface doesn't give you a clear idea what's beneath.

my BFF did her first comic ever and now she's promoted by webtoon, tapas and other platforms. And actually I'm happy for her. She got rubbish job so I hope that one day she will be able to leave that job to do what she likes.
I'm doing comics moste of my life and never got attention of anyone, but still I'm happy for her. One day it might be me who knows :3
I'm more like mad when I see on oryginals on pages like webtoon , comics, which are rubbish made. They are just ugly. And then I think "what am I doing wrong?".

Truth be told, My aim is just to draw and write a story I want to make and letting so many people around the world to freely read, comment, and review about them, and if it succeeds, then this will benefit my comic for receiving so many readers.

We do not succeed by just drawing\writing Novels/Comics, we make friendly communications online on Tapas by subscribing to their contents, commenting and liking on their updates, and continue making interesting topics on the forum and in return we receive subscribers either from them or time that takes for it to happen.

We even spread it on Deviant art, instagram, Twitter, and any social media where we can post our links to our content and post a piece of the comic page or posts that connects to the novel (Depending on the size) for everyone to see and read.

So, just updating comic/novel pages does not work on their own.

I however, did not make my comic for the sake of success, but because I am compassionate of the story I am making, respecting the lore, the characters, the factions, the established ground rules and not alienate any of them for the sake of success or money.
