Hello! I’m new here - does anyone have any super tapas tips for a newbie?

Hi guys! I’m new to tapas (and comics in general!) but I just wanted to say how awesome everyone has been in my first week of ‘tapas-ing’ (that’s gotta be a word right?) and how the community seems really positive and welcoming! For someone new like me, and perhaps a little apprehensive about posting work you guys have really helped me out! I was wondering if there is any super tips you experienced folks might’ve picked up that would help me out as a new poster, or any common mistakes people normally make when posting here that I can (hopefully) avoid? I’m sure I’ve made a few already in my first comic - but hopefully with your help I can avoid going completely off the rails with this thing!

I think my biggest tips would be, don't gauge your success by the stats page and don't put too much pressure on yourself. I know when I first joined I was obsessed with that stats page and the lack of results (in my mind) drove me to stop writing for months. I eventually came to the decision that I was going to write to grow and what really mattered were the followers who honestly cared about my work.

I think too many people on here get stat-obsessed. At the risk of sounding corny, just do what is in your heart! You came to write and create, so remember to stay true to that!

As well, stay active on the forums! We really want you here So hang around and make some friends!

1. Keep in mind that when you're new on a social platform, no one knows you exist. This is no fault of yours. So if you get no readers or comments or subscribers, it's because they don't know you. Give it time.

2. Your job, then, is to get your name out there. You have done a great first step by showing up here, posting, and asking for advice. Interact with people. Comment on other stories. Once you become more familiar, people will start showing up at your figurative doorstep.

3. Stay positive. Tapas is a supportive environment because they respect each other. People with differing opinions can have a discussion without resorting to name-calling or belittling anyone. Respect is a huge deal.

4. Be regular. Like bowel movements, it's good to be active in posting your stuff. Readers enjoy continuing a story to its end, so try to keep at it. I personally prefer to write my entire story offline, edit it at least once, and then start posting it here. That way my schedule is solid and I won't ever leave anyone hanging because I gave up on the story.

5. Keep having fun! Don't feel pressured to keep writing (or drawing), despite what I said in #4. The whole point of this creative endeavor is because you love it. If you stop loving it, then it will probably show in your work. When you encounter writers block, take a break and let your creativity breathe a little.

6. If that does happen (I got blocked very recently, actually!) don't cut yourself off from the writing world altogether. Come here and interact with other artists and writers. Keep a finger on the pulse of what's going on. It may feel like procrastination, but it's a way to keep writing, even if you're just blabbering about how blocked you feel. You just may find inspiration to get back to the storytelling.

I think the best advice is never give up, because it's really easy to get dissapointed if you don't have the results you were waiting for and you need to be so patient. I am posting my comic since almost one month ago and I'm still with just one subscriber, which is so fine but, of course we all want to be succesfull and we all want to share our stories with many people.

Just be sure you enjoy what you do because at the end of the day, it will be your biggest motivation to carry on
