At number three we have “Turn Back the Clock” by Steam Powered Giraffe. This song is about a robot who befriends a little girl through music, but watches her drift away and eventually forget their friendship as she grows up

At number two, we have “Up to the Stars” by SAINT PHNX, a song about the grief that comes with the passing of a loved one

And at number one we have “Memento Mori: The Most Important Thing in the World” by Will Wood and the Tapeworms. It’s about how death is inevitable for all of us and in the end we’ll all just be forgotten as time marches forward and claims more lives, so we might as well live however the hell we want.

maNga - Dursun Zaman
This song reminds me of death, even tho it never really directly mentiones it but uses symbolic lyrics. It gives the exact feeling that I get whenever I heard someone died, the feeling of losing someone, the numbness, the acceptance, wanting to cry my lungs out and then console myself saying "that person may found peace now"
The translations on the internet may use "she" to refer to the lost one in the song but Turkish has no grammatical gender, so there's actually no girl in the song and it refers to anyone that's gone.

Pink Floyd - Goodbye Blue Sky
It feels like a child that doesn't know about war and wonders what is happening to them. Kids are the real victims of all the ward this world has faced, it is heartbreaking.

Travis - Why does it always rain on me?
A perfect explanation of my depressed for no reason mood.

Here's my contribution

War - Icon for Hire
It me of the hardships I went through with my sister during a mental breakdown. Depression is a nasty thing.

Hold On To Memories - Disturbed
It's a great song about keeping memories alive of those that have left us.

Dark Night of the Soul - Philip Wesley
Sometimes we just vibe with a song. It just... Is so melancholic

Two of my songs are from musicals, so hopefully that's OK. lol

1. So Big, So Small - Dear Evan Hansen

The song itself is from Dear Evan Hansen, but I really enjoy the villain!Deku MHA AU animatic for it. I'm a mom myself, so I can get that feeling about feeling so small when trying to be there, be strong, for your kid and you feel like you're coming up short.

2. Karma - AJR

Just a super relatable song, I think. Despite feeling "being good," and still grappling with feelings of being depressed and empty. No matter how good you are, there's still going to be struggles in life. I don't know if it's necessarily sad, but it's definitely sobering.

3. All You Wanna Do - Six: The Musical

An upbeat song about the abuse Catherine Howard dealt with her whole life. Basically men taking advantage of her when she was younger and then being stuck in a relationship with Henry VIII. When she finally thought she had a friend, he still just wanted something more physical from her.

idk I can relate heavily to being taking advantage of and men I wanted friendships with only wanting more from me.

They’re still making music. It’s Spine, Rabbit, and Zero right now. They post updates on their YouTube Channel - sometimes in or out of character. Everybody seems happy and healthy.

Listened to everything. I like most of them even through they're not in my genre. Some I already knew. Still didn't find something to hit me like a ton of bricks.

But I mostly enjoy this thread for the reasons behind the songs.

anything by keaton henson really.
not about romantic love

"if you must die, sweetheart, die knowing your life was my life's best part"

George Salazar is a blessing and his delivery of this one is just qwq
not about romantic love either

"And although
I'll be out of sight, dear
Know I'll be right here
Right here forever, ever, ever, ever"

Low roar is def my favourite post rock artist.

"I wanna feel something again memorable"

I knowwww they don't need to saound sad, but I cried at all of them several times so I would lie if i didn't nominate them.

actualllly, I have one more that fits this bill

it's about the narrative where credit is given to trauma. like, because of it, you became a better person. which is bullshit.
AJJ is pretty angry. definitely not sad sounding haha

I'd definetely say these are the songs that officially made me tear up or made me sad.

First up we have "Hymn for the missing" by Red, which made me pretty sad.

Then there's "Last Train Home" by Pat Metheny, which is not exactly sad, but it is very nostalgic and bittersweet and it definetely made me cry more than once.

And then there's "The Lonely" by Christina Perri, which just makes me feel empty inside whenever I listen to it.

I'm sure there are more sad songs I really love, it's just that I don't remember 'em all.

My top 3:

Oh Brother by John Floreani

About a tumultuous relationship between 2 brothers. This is one of my favourite songs.

Your Deep Rest by Hotelier

About the suicide of a loved one and the inability to get closure.

I just want to sell out my funeral by The Wonder Years

About being scared of failure and wanting to be remembered for something worthwhile after death.

RIP Chester Bennington. The song's about wanting to be remembered after death in good memories.. Chester's not one to shy away from putting his feelings into his lyrics, whether that's angst or sadness.. But real talk, this one in particular is tough to read the lyrics for. For those who aren't aware, the singer took his life a few years ago, and he's mentioned being depressed before in multiple interviews. Given that info, the context of the song has somewhat changed now and it could be interpreted as him openly expressing that he's been having thoughts of suicide several years before he died.

This one's lyrics are essentially about a single mom trying to make ends meet after her husband is arrested. In doing so, her kid grows up without a father and she eventually gets into an abusive relationship with another man. This puts a lot of stress on the kid, eventually resulting in him commiting self-harm. From what I understand, it's based on the rapper's childhood experience. The video basically shows all this, so here's my content warning for it.

RIP Tom Searle. The main songwriter and guitarist of Architects passed away a few years ago from cancer, and this is one of the last songs he partially wrote and arranged as a demo. The lyrics were written by his brother who is also the band's drummer. The song essentially deals with mourning the loss of a loved one, but also focuses on moving afterwards.
